White paint recommendations

Hello what white paint would you recommend for an east facing room with double glazed doors as the only natural light? We are in a Victorian terrace property if that makes any difference!

We also have a future nursery we are thinking we will paint the same white colour as its east facing with 1 window also, albeit a smaller room.

Thanks for any help!

I'm redecorating atm and using Farrow and Ball 'all white' plus sone coloured accents in a few areas.
F&B is expensive but IMO worth it for low VOC content. Esp as expecting a baby & dint want to be stuck in a flat full of toxic chemicals for the next year.,,,
In my rental property I used a standard dulux paint in the whitest white I could find. It looked smart but stank (was living there while we redecorated). If you have / are planning kids I'd recommend not going for a totally matte finish as it scuffs and marks so fast and will have handprints all over it. A slight sheen (eg F&B) modern emulsion is wipe cleanable and so should last longer (though tbc if wasn't planning kids would go as matts as possible as I prefer the look.

We've got f&B All White in our living room, Victorian terrace east/west facing.... doors at back too - but it's a lovely, warm, just off-white. Also have Wimborne white in the bedroom but is a bit too creamy.

FloorLamp · 01/01/2019 17:12

I used Dulux 'Timeless' throughout my house.

I also went with Diamond Matt as it is totally scrubbable! perfect for kids and animals!

It is a bit more expensive as it comes from the Deluxe decorator centre ( I don't know if you can buy it off the shift in B&Q etc?) but totally worth the extra cost in my opinion and will last for years.

justaweeone · 01/01/2019 18:36

I like timeless as well and also Crown stone white

IStillMissBlockbuster · 01/01/2019 18:39

Dulux White Cotton or Timeless are good whites.

CatnissEverdene · 01/01/2019 18:42

We've used a lot of Zoffany white clay in our house..... we've got 3 walls of it and ceiling in the living room, and ceiling/woodwork in our dining room. It's a lovely off white, sort of chalky and lightens the room without being stark.

EvaHarknessRose · 01/01/2019 18:45

Timeless

stellarfox · 02/01/2019 21:29

Thank you for the suggestions! Those of you that have used F&B was it hard to work with yourself? We're planning on doing our own decorating

F&B is apparently a dream to use compared to others. I confess that DH is doing all the painting so not speaking from experience. But he was just painting this afternoon & told me how easy it was to use and how much nicer to work with than the Leyland stuff he used last time we redecorated. From my perspective it is great that the flat doesn't smell as I am heavily pregnant and am off work all week while we paint. And I feel a bit less worried about sleeping in fumes etc... So thumbs up from both of us!

Yearofthemum · 03/01/2019 00:33

I've painted with it loads It's fine. Quite thick.

BF888 · 03/01/2019 00:36

Depending on how much you want to spend on paint. The brands I use for my clients which I love are earthborn (eco friendly) , zoffany, f&b, designers guild. Johnstones Trade are pretty good. I’ve also been one of the lucky ones and had good result with valspar.

stellarfox · 03/01/2019 08:30

Thank you! I’ve ordered some Dulux and F&B testers!

I have always found b&q own paint to be very good.

SleepingBooty · 03/01/2019 09:26

We colour matched Timeless with Valspar. I love it, it changes colour with different light from light grey to pale green.

SureIusedtobetaller · 03/01/2019 09:32

Valspar has higher VOC than other matt paints- noticed this when we did our bedroom.
Wickes own paint is actually really nice to use, low voc and I just used a white for my daughter’s room- Ghost I think it was. They had a few shades.

IStillMissBlockbuster · 03/01/2019 21:23

What is VOC?

legolammb · 03/01/2019 21:58

I've gone for Timeless in 2 bedrooms and am just about to do my hallway in it. In a middle bedroom it looks like a soft white, in a west-facing bedroom it's a little warmer and judging from the testers in my internal hallway it will look slightly chalky!

FlipFlapBat · 03/01/2019 22:02

We’ve just re-done our whole house in Dulux White Cotton and it’s made so much difference. It’s a really nice white and has transformed the space. We have a few accent walls in various shades of Farrow and Ball which we found MUCH harder to work with.

KarBB · 04/01/2019 08:10

@IStillMissBlockbuster VOC stands for Volatile Organic Compounds - https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volatileorganicc_compound
Wikipedia explains it quite well but basically they are harmful chemicals which offgas from lots of products we keep in our houses. They are starting to be regulated but not fast enough IMO. They are what makes paint, cleaning products and new furniture give off a smell for at least a few months...

legolammb · 04/01/2019 19:41

Interesting re. VOCs - I painted a feature wall in colour match valspar over the weekend and definitely noticed that it was more fume-ey that usual Dulux. It also didn't go on quite as nicely either

WillowB · 04/01/2019 20:27

Another vote for timeless. Have decorated most of our house with it. Hardly gives off any smell/fumes either. Valspar on the other hand stinks!

stellarfox · 08/01/2019 08:26

Hello thanks so much for the help. I think we’re gojng to go with the F&B All White as looks much more pigmented and whiter than the dulux colours we tried. Did you do two coats? We’re painting over magnolia! @KarBB @kitchencurios

OP posts:
goldpendant · 08/01/2019 09:08

It's me, kitchencurios, I've NC'd....

I'd buy it in Johnstone's colour match, get a kitchen-suitable finish. F&B did nothing but chip/flake in our last kitchen. You should only need two coats!

stellarfox · 08/01/2019 09:51

@goldpendant It’s for two rooms: a study/dining room and a nursery. Would it be ok in these rooms?

OP posts:
goldpendant · 08/01/2019 10:04

Having used both F&B and Johnstone's copies, is only ever use the latter again.
