Hi, I have moved into a house and it has lining paper/wall paper everywhere . Some of the lining paper(on some ceilings to)has come Off one wall and the wall Is not great underneath. I’m happy to try strip all The wall Paper off but then I think I’ll Need to replaster/skim which I have no Chance at doing myself, how much do
People think replastering maybe 700sq ft would be? I live in kt2 (Kingston). Thanks for all the help.

Another one stuck with a load of bad lining paper here!

I just had a quote for a 13ft x 13ft ceiling only - remove lining paper and replaster £700. Also in the SE.

Thanks , this sounds like it may get get very expensive to get a nice finish ...ah well such is life I guess , I’ll
Just live with the wall paper the way it is until I can afford better

The other alternative is to put more lining paper up over the existing. We had this issue after wallpaper stripping left the lining paper and the decorator cut off damaged bits (with a Stanley knife) and the butted new bits up to the old bits. Cheaper than skimming and it looks good painted and re wallpapered

Thanks misty , I’m useless at this kind of stuff it’s probably more straightforward to
Just get the skimming...I think?

Pay for someone to do it if you have plenty money.

Personally I’d strip it off, sand the walls, fill any bits that need done, put up wall rock paper and paint on top. We have just done this on our whole flat.

The wall rock paper is very thick and covers minor imperfections.

Fairytale, nice suggestion, but I’m
Utterly useless at this stuff , I’d probably make it worse !

Do you think you could strip the walls yourself? What about painting with emulsion? (Very easy )

If you can so that bit of the job, get a quote from a decorator to prepare the walls and hang wall rock paper.

You really really don’t want to plaster walls if you can avoid it . It’s expensive and very messy .

You can paint directly on to plaster and if it’s not in the best condition you can disguise the damage with very mat paint. The plasternin my house is original and has some some impressive crazing/cracks. We had one room skimmed (£400) and it looked lovely but over times a few of the bigger cracks has come back. Our plasterer says it would need to go back to brick to get it prefect which just isn’t a priority atm.

The other rooms I painted with polycel ceiling crack free smoother paint and it covered the cracks no problem at all. Was a bit of a bugger to work with but I’m impressed with the results.

Thanks very much. When you say strip the walls - I worry I’ll pull
Off some of the plaster ! So will be forced to replaster

Just don’t use a steamer and you’ll be ok. Use a sponge and just wet the paper and scrape it off. Lining paper is really easy to remove.

Pulling off small bits of plaster doesn’t mean that the whole wall needs replastered! There are always small holes and cracks, you just fill and sand.

Good to know - thanks all
