Fireplace or wall mounted tv

We are thinking of ideas for decorating our lounge/diner in the new year and just looking to get advice/opinions on what to do. My husband is keen to put the flat screen tv on the wall (currently on a corner tv cabinet) but this would mean removing the fireplace. It's not a traditional old fireplace and the house is only 25 years old, so it's not a big deal to remove.

What would you prefer?

Definitely keep the fireplace OP. Is there not another wall for the tv to go?

Snowglobes · 03/12/2018 04:54

Another one for keeping the fireplace. Albeit photos could help.

We’ve gone for the wall mounted tv, and got rid of the huge fugly fireplace that was there.

It’s fine, but I am still trying to think of something to put in that place, there’s a bit of an odd spot. But it keeps the telly away from little hands.

We had a fireplace installed as the t.v. wasn't enough as a focal point plus I hate massive tv's which command a room! Noting nicer than an evening with dh/friends tv off and fire on x

Thanks guys, that helps confirm that nagging feeling that removing the fireplace isn't the right way to go. I think I will probably keep the surround but update the gas fire to something more suited to our style. When I think about it, Christmas wouldn't be the same again without it!

How about the wall opposite the fireplace, with your seating arranged at right angles?

Igletpiglet · 04/12/2018 09:34

We are pondering the same right now.
We are building an extension.
tryinf to set it up so that a wall mounted fireplace is the fopcus of the open plan 's sitting area.
trying to snealk in a telly.
I have decided ( thourough traling mumnset ) that telly above fireplace basically is uncomfortable for wtching long term. so would have to be mounted on a bracket that angles out , in an alcove next to fireplace. or even.... get the samsung frame. www.samsung.com/uk/tvs/the-frame/highlights2/

mydogisthebest · 04/12/2018 09:37

Fireplace definitely. I absolutely hate tv's on the wall and, thankfully, DH agrees with me

MrsGollach · 04/12/2018 09:39

Fireplace. I too hate TVs on walls.

VictoryOrValhalla · 04/12/2018 09:40

Fireplace. TVs on walls are awful.

SpamChaudFroid · 04/12/2018 09:48

Have you got alcoves on either side of the fireplace? That's where I have my TV. It's wall mounted, but very low down on the wall, on an extendable bracket, so the same height as if it were on a stand. It's also tiny by todays standards, (32").

newsmoo · 04/12/2018 10:03

I have both, the mix of modern and traditional can work. Black tv on wall in alcove mid height positioned over a Mexican pine unit. A black slate fire surround on the chimney breast with a black metal portrait hung mirror above and black slate tiled harth. Not everyone's tastes granted, but giving the example that you can have both if you'd like Smile

Fireplace should always be the main focus of the room - I hate wall mounted TVs especially over the fireplace BUT that Sumsung idea looks interesting - only worry is that the art selection might be dodgy? Like the idea of a low level TV that can be swung out and then swung back in again when entertaining.

Bluesheep8 · 09/12/2018 08:07

Fireplace. I'm another one who HATES tv's on walls.

WillChellam · 09/12/2018 08:12

Why not both? We have a victorian house with cast iron fireplaces, several of our rooms have a TV mounted on the chimney breast.

If the fire is in use you have to take measures to deal with heat, and its important to keep the TV low profile and ideally the same width as the fire to make the proportions correct.

Samsung now do tvs that replicate the background they're on and are very discreet when not in use
