How would you turn this into a play area?

We would like to turn this area on our upstairs landing into a play area. We need an area for our DS (4 & 6) to play Lego or do drawing etc as well as plenty of storage for Lego, toys and arts and crafts things.
We keep dithering between fitting a bench- type table along the wall under the window (1.5m long) or alternatively along either side, with storage on the opposite side, or even a sort of corner table along two sides. Ideally we would like them to be able to fit their legs under a play table so the storage can't fill the area underneath the table.
How would you organise this space? (The bureau will be moving by the way)

I would probably put a small table on one side and storage on the opposite side. I would leave the area under the window clear or maybe even put a chalk board or something up. Child friendly flooring and the kallax style storage squares would be ideal.

Erm not sure I'd have a table or simply they could stand on and easily launch themselves over the top of the banister...

RandomMess yes that was our concern - DS2 is a climber with no sense of self preservation.
MrsL2016 I do like the sound of that idea though, maybe putting the table the other side of the half wall and getting storage that can't be climbed on?

I was thinking something like this and at the opposite side to the banister. With storage in the way I think they would be unable to stand on it and get over.

I do storage units up the wall, a low pile rug so they can build Lego on it and a couple of bean bags or floor cushions to sit on.

I'd be tempted to have no table for a good few years and let them build on the floor, it's not just your DC but visitors/friends...

Couple of big yoga mats, a big chalkboard/blackboard on the wall and a small storage unit from IKEA to attach to the wall for stuff. I wouldn't have anything they could stand on if I'm honest.

Floor is lovely and perfect for building on and lounging on - beanbags is a great idea.

I'd be tempted to get kallax units the stairs side and the tall ones so no climbing on them and going over the edge! And it's bigger storage.

youarenotkiddingme · 18/11/2018 15:22

Or is there anyway of building shelving from the bannister to the roof and having the storage there - more free floor space then and again a barrier to going over!

Smorgs · 18/11/2018 15:55

Great ideas thanks, keep them coming!
We have that IKEA table and chairs mrsL2016 and it's just not big enough for them to tip the Lego out and construct - they like to man-spread!

I would go with what @youarenotkiddingme said it was exactly what I thought. You could have a thin mdf board to put on the floor so they have a hard surface to build on?

Or perhaps a very low coffee table so if they sit cross legged on the floor it's the correct height? Could just chop legs down on a 2nd hand one?

When they are older it could be a homework area with desk so I wouldn't build anything permanent in there.
