Made to measure curtains?

Ladies (and Gents!)

Need some ideas please as I'd really like to replace my curtains, but the window (patio door) is HUGE!

It's 3m wide and 2m drop.

The widest ready made curtains I've seen are 228cm (2.30m)

My budget isn't huge ... And I'd really like them thermal black out (I think it's interlined?)

Soooo .... looking for inspiration and ideas please 😊😊

TIA XX

I'm not really sure what you're asking.

We have had great experiences with online places like 247 curtains, and though they are more expensive than readymades, they are not the several hundred pounds that high end places will charge.

Another option might be to get 2 sets of readymades and stitch them together.

Try eBay. There are loads of good quality curtains on there for a fraction of what they would cost to have professionally made.

You'll need to get them made or buy 2 pairs & take the hem up. Wayfair.com used to do wider curtains but not a great choice.

I have a 3m Window. I bought some eyelet 228 x 229cm curtains in next clearance which are fine. One day i’ll get made to measure but the budget couldn’t stretch at the moment. Having said that, Next often have some made to measure fabrics on sale which does make it a lot more affordable.

Thanks everyone! Good ideas!

Obvs I'd rather buy ready made, just not sure how easy it is to join together 😳🙄

So your whole window is 3m wide. The curtain measurements you're seeing is per curtain. So if you buy the pair you've seen, you'll actually have a width of 4.6m, will is plenty when their pulled shut!

Shmithecat · 24/10/2018 13:29

they're, not their. 🙄

I got my ridiculously large curtains made at a place in Kirkcaldy. Was very reasonable.

CountFosco · 24/10/2018 13:39

It's the fabric that costs the money, you'll need 6m min width (not including seams) and 2m plus 40cm hemming plus 1 pattern repeat per drop (possibly need 5-6 drops for that width). So get cheap as chips fabric from IKEA, then go to a seamstress to make them. Or do you know anyone handy with a sewing machine? Curtains aren't hard to make so you could even try yourself.

Dotte · 24/10/2018 14:02

Ikea do some curtains that are a thermal fabric and are pretty reasonably priced. They look thicker than they are too which is good. When I bought them they all came in a standard 3m length so I just shortened them. You’d probably need to buy 2 pairs but it could be a cheaper way of getting a refresh of colour in the room. You could just join them at the top so that they opened as 1 pair and then just dress them when opened so that you can’t really tell too much that you have 2 pairs up.

eBay is a great for curtains. There is no comparison between proper made to measure (quality fabric, interlining, pinch pleats) and ready mades.

Have a good look on eBay - particularly from the specialist pre-loved curtain sellers before you get some specially made.

We moved to an old very drafty house last year and have recently bought about 5 pairs of eBay curtains and I am delighted with the quality look and price. Especially after paying a small fortune on made to measure curtains in our last house which I left behind me.

Honestly I am never buying ready made again.

Did none of them fit in the new house? We took all our curtains with us when we moved.

Not the best decision I ever made but they were included on the fixtures and fittings list.

SnuggyBuggy · 26/10/2018 08:26

Do you feel confident buying fabric and making your own?

Piggyhoolier · 26/10/2018 08:33

I have a large lounge where the entire back wall is floor to ceiling glass. I have 2 pairs of ready made largest size curtains, not joined together just pushed up against each other. You can’t tell at all. You need a large bunch of fabric to look right at each end, and when closed you need the fabric to still ripple, pulled taut looks a bit mean and cheap and doesn’t dress the window nicely imo.
