Hard flooring that would work in kitchen, bathroom & living room

My sister has just bought her first flat. She needs to replace the horrible stained carpet tiles throughout the flat. She's getting carpet for the bedroom, but the living room/kitchen/diner are all one room, so she wants a flooring that would work for that room & the bathroom and tiny hallway. It's ground floor, so no worries about noise with a hard floor.

She can't afford anything expensive like engineered wood, so the options are probably laminate, lino/vinyl or ceramic tiles. She's not sure if any of these would really work - e.g. laminate probably not ok for wet areas, but lino or tiles might not work in the living area. Does anyone have any suggestions? I am thinking lino might be the best option as not too cold for a living area but seems to come in quite a big range of designs, but not sure she could afford the 'posh' versions - Karndean, etc.

Any ideas please for what might work and not cost too much?

Laminate is fine for wet areas so I would go for a decent quality laminate.

Wood effect tiles x

Thanks UnRavelling - I didn't realise laminate would be ok for the bathroom. Will pass that on to my sister.
Ladi85 I really like wood effect tiles (have them in my kitchen) but I think they would be cold for a living room unless she can afford underfloor heating.

Camaro is a type of luxury vinyl tiling similar to Karndean but cheaper.

I am doing a similar flpor in my annexe.

I am having riven slate flagstones, from.Ms Stone Store
After 6 months of debating and samples!!!

Ooh I love riven slate. Yes OP I have had same (cheapish Blush ) laminate in kitchen and bathroom for a decade and no sign of problems at all despite dcs going from toddler to early teens and splashing bathroom to death and ddog peeing and pooing in kitchen as a young puppy urgh!!!! Also very sloppy fish tank cleaning in bathroom! So well tried and trusted.

Vinyl in a wood effect. Shop around and you can get nice wood textured ones for a fairly low price. Then have a nice rug in the lounge area.

Laminate is slippy, can swell if it gets wet, and things can break more easily if dropped on it.

Thanks for all the ideas. I'm going with her to a couple of flooring shops at the weekend to see what they have in the way of vinyl and laminate and suitability for bathrooms, cost of installing, etc.

We have tiles in a slate grey throughout the house, everywhere (including bedrooms), with rugs laid on top in key areas. Works really well!

crabapplecrumble · 24/10/2018 18:41

TheKitchenWitch do you have underfloor heating? I think tiles would be ideal because they are so hardwearing and easy to look after, but worried about them being cold in winter.

Yes, we have underfloor heating (it's a new house we had built), which I thought would be weird but it doesn't ever feel hot, just very pleasant.
I don't know how it would be without underfloor heating, although with more rugs I guess it would be ok? Plus I wear slippers so am not so affected by floor temperature :)
