Johnstones vinyl Matt or an eggshell? Builder confusing me.

So the builders are wanting us to get the paint in ready for them to decorate. I have chosen farrow and ball colours, but don't have a farrow and ball budget. I used Johnstones before when decorating the hall and I felt it was fine. Just gone to get some for one of the bedrooms and the builder has said he thinks an eggshell would be better Confused The Johnstones is an vinyl matt as below. I have tried googling but can't work out the difference between a vinyl Matt and eggshell. Can anyone enlighten me please or give me good stories of the paint shown ( or bad!) Ta.

what does a builder know, ask a painter and decorator.
Vinyl matt comes off if you wipe it, especially johnstones, although better than crown it's no Dulux.
Eggshell is shinier and more robust but hasn't got the natural matt look.

It depends where the paint is being used
For walls Matt is fine, for woodwork eggshell gives a less glossy but still hard wearing finish than gloss
Eggshell can be used on walls but your builder won’t thank you, it’s awful to apply
If you have water stains or nicotine stained ceilings then eggshell can be used to stop the stain from seeping through

Eeek romany that doesn't sound good....wiping off?
prestons just being used on bedroom walls. It was the builder that suggested eggshell?! Maybe we should have out sourced the decorating Grin too late now really. We are using eggshell on the woodwork I believe.
I'm presuming you are both in the 'know as you sound v knowledgeable. Would you not rate Johnstones then?

Yes, you could say that I do know a bit about paint!!
Long story but I promise you I do know

Eggshell on the woodwork will be fine, it’s just not as shiny as gloss. It’s very good if the woodwork is a bit bumpy, as in old and a bit battered
Johnstones paint is ok, most retail paint in the U.K. is pretty good. It’s really not worth paying a massive premium for emulsion
Farrow and Ball colours are lovely but the paint is not easy to use.
I would never buy Dulux, the mark up is huge
I think they have to pay for the adverts 😀

Thank you prestons so I should be ok sticking to the Johnstones vinyl Matt then? The colour match isn't that great but my d's won't notice and so it doesn't really matter that much. If you had to choose a paint brand/type to paint bedroom walls what would you choose?!

Hi Op, Matt paint is a low sheen paint that is very good on less than perfect walls, it’s not always as durable as vinyl silk which can be wiped/scrubbed, but some matt brands are pretty durable ie Littlegreene or Mylands, I have never used Johnson’s so cant comment Albany paint is a cheaper alternative to the premium brands & gives a good finish also has some nice colours.
Eggshell is for wood can also be used on metal, it’s easy to use & again gives a good finish, would not advise using on walls.

@bobkat
My DH used to own a paint company so I always use that paint- sorry, no help to you at all. They don’t supply retail paint though, they mix it for me😊
If you’ve had the paint mixed for the colour then it will be a very good consistency so it should be fine.

My whole house is painted in Johnstone’s vinyl Matt in F&B colours and i can confirm it does not while off. It’s what most decent decorators use.

You want the vinyl Matt for walls. Eggshell is for wood and stuff.

Methe · 09/10/2018 18:16

Does not wipe off.

You can literally scrub it to get it clean. Awesome stuff.

IMissGin · 09/10/2018 18:31

Matt for walls, eggshell for woodwork

bobkate · 09/10/2018 19:51

Thank you all!!! Much appreciated! So methe have you used the same as in my pic, just colour matched?
The paint shop man also recommended I use this one pictured for the en suite... have you used a different one for the bathroom or stuck to the same vinyl Matt?
prestons lucky you!!! Thanks for your help x

Yeah that one. My bathroom is tiled wall to ceiling so can’t help you there but if I needed to paint the ceiling or anything I’d definitely use it.

dontcallmelen · 09/10/2018 20:11

I think it’s just a bit more wipeable, especially in steamy rooms such bathrooms & kitchens also it has a slight sheen to it so in between matt & silk finish.

bobkate · 09/10/2018 20:21

Thanks. Appreciate the help. I think the builder is just worrying me unnecessarily Hmm

bobkate I agree he seems to be making it very complicated for you.

Twillow · 09/10/2018 21:02

Have used Johnstones very happily and had them mix it in F&B shades, you wouldn't have known the difference.
