I'm going to get the opportunity to redecorate the kitchen soon. It is a very small kitchen with not much wall to actually paint. The cupboards are pine effect, the work tops are black mottled effect, the tiles between the top and bottom cupboards are cream and currently the walls are magnolia. There are top and bottom cupboards/wall units across two walls, and one window and two doors out of the remaining walls. The space in the middle is about 2 steps across. Dark sleight floor. It's an old house so I'd love something country kitchen style, but with only limited walls to paint and such a small space, I'm not finding the internet images very inspiring. So, what colour should I paint the kitchen?

Do you like brights, darks or neutrals?

Dark colours are very fashionable right now, but sounds like it might be a bit overpowering in your kitchen. How about a soft sage or light olive green? Or pink? There's so many great pinks around at the moment - either something light and plasterish (F&B Setting Plaster or Peignoir) or earthy (F&B Sulking Room Pink, Rockett St George Broderie, Mylands Soho House).

If you want a pale neutral, then taupey colours are making a comeback and some are lovely - F&B Dropcloth or Jitney. Browner tones are fashionable; I like Fired Earth Basswood, which is a soft pinky fawn and would look lovely in a country kitchen.

What colour are the pine mock effect doors? Are they toned down or slightly orange?

Ceilingrose · 03/10/2018 14:11

Posted too soon.

If they have an orange tinge they are very much part of the scheme, even if wood/wood effect. So I would be looking at what goes with that colour , as the tiles and surface are fairly neutral.

Blues and greens and olives go with orangey pine, but I wouldn't choose pink, I don't think. You could paint the cupboards with eggshell paint, though, to increase your options. It would also look classic modern country.

I've tried to attach photos of the cupboards/tiles/work surfaces, hopefully they work!

Thank you for all the suggestions. So far I think Peignoir is my favourite - I think some of the others are a bit too dark and like that this one has a colour rather than just beige like, if that makes sense.

I quite like the idea of a similar shade in green I think, maybe F&B Green Ground or Cooking Apple Green?

Dulux crushed aloe is lovely x

Those doors look more maple or maybe beech effect on my computer - lighter than pine.

I think those 2 greens would look good if the cupboards are as light as they appear on my PC. If they're darker IRL then maybe go a shade darker, eg lichen?

Sorry, my wood effect knowledge is lacking, they are quite light. My testers have arrived, now I need to wait for a moment not to give DP a heart attack and apply them. Excited! If I got decorators in, would they whitewash first or just paint over the existing paint?

Yes that does seem like maple not pine. Hope it goes well.

@keiki what did you choose? Photos please? I’m looking peignoir for my bathroom so I’d love to see if you chose that or even how the sampler looked!

Keiki · 06/12/2018 20:47

Sorry for the massive delay! @snowglobes, here are the samples. Dulux timeless on the right, then moving left f&b peignoir, green ground and cooking apple, with dulux velvet truffle 5 on the left. Not sure which i prefer yet.
