Chevron or herringbone?

We will be renovating an old house in a few months and really need to decide on the flooring for downstairs. It will be for an open plan kitchen/living/dining space - about 9m x 7m. I really want to go for either a chevron or herringbone floor in a natural oak and can’t decide which to go for. I feel like chevron looks a bit more modern perhaps? Does anyone have any experience of either and which do you prefer? The builders are trying to dissuade me by saying how hard work it is and how much maintenance it requires (we have small children) but I know I’d regret it if I didn’t as I think a big open plan space is perfect for this sort of floor.

Any thoughts and opinions hugely appreciated! Also, does anyone know of any ‘cheat’ chevron that looks like the real thing, eg the ready made strips? Thanks!

I think you are right, chevron looks more modern. This is why I prefer herringbone!

I'd go for herringbone, it's a timeless classic.
Don't let builders put you off, you'll be living with it for years, it's worth doing properly.

Having the same debate here! Chevron looks smarter but herringbone looks more friendly somehow... I think it’s because chevron is more pointy.

Just looked them both up. I will be renovating an old house in a few years and will replace an old floor with this. I would choose Herringbone, timeless and more vintage.
