How do I make my living room look less brown?

We have oak furniture.
We have oak floor.
We have a light brown sofa.
Then the curtains and walls are a dark creamy colour - natural hessian I think.
Woodwork/ceilings white.

It's all the same bloody colour. Just varying shades.

I can't replace furniture/sofa as it's all pretty new and/or expensive.

The floor is a little bit shabby so at a push could replace that though isn't that bad and will be expensive :(

What can I do to make it seem less brown?!

Throw in some multicoloured cushions, vases and a rug?

RickOShay · 26/09/2018 14:43

Agree with biscuit. Also a mirror and maybe a few plants?
and a throw. TKMaxx do good ones.

Cushions, rugs and lamps can add colour relatively inexpensively. Maybe teal or lime green as accent colours?

Have a look at Wilko or Dunelm - both have pretty good ranges. You may find stuff in Asda or The Range too.

Pick an accent colour and use tones of that for curtains, cushions, a rug, accessories.

For example my lounge in my rented house is a bit brown - walls are camera, sofa is beigey brown and floor is wood. My furniture is oak. I’ve got soft plaid red curtains, red cushions, a soft red/cream plaid rug, some pictures on the walls in muted colours. It’s not too matchy matchy but sort of blends together.

Camera? WTF. Cream.

Accessories (rugs, cushions, throws, lighting, plants etc) and art! Some texture and subtle patterns to attract the eye around the room and add depth.

Thank you all.
I'm not very good at the accessorising thing! We do have a rug - it's cream!
Are there any soft/gentle/pale colours that you think would 'go'? Think I'd prefer some softer colours rather than bright. Or is that the problem? Confused

You don’t have to go bright - I’m not a fan of bright either Smile

If you’re on Pinterest search ‘Brown Colour Palette’ for some ideas, maybe? It’ll show you some of those fun images where there’s a picture of something and then the range of colours in the image is attached - that way you can get an idea of combinations you like.

I’d personally go with earthy/rich tones - hunter/olive green, ochre, burgundy, blush, sapphire etc. If you’re not big on a lot of colour focus on shape and texture instead, like velvet or embroidered cushions (TK Maxx are great for this!), different sized and shaped cushions, textured throws.

You could get an interesting vase or lamp-base.

A large piece of artwork perhaps? If you can splash some paint about you could make your own custom art!

I would change the colour of the walls to a very light off white egg Timeless.

Then add pictures, throws and cushions in a colour or two, plus a rug.

I have very brown living room. The walls are green. Not bright green, a lightish green. like this Although its lighter on the wall.

Then have a tartan curtain with green undertones and purple stripes through it. Then gold/brown/bronze picture frames.
I luv it. Soooo much so that i resist all suggests to paint it cream Grin

FizzyFeet · 27/09/2018 21:11

Plants definitely! And rugs, pictures, cushions etc. You could try a soft blush pink and duck egg blue to add colour without being bright.

Bluesheep8 · 28/09/2018 06:10

Pale or duck egg blue looks lovely with browns and Beiges. I have this as an accent colour, cushions, throws etc.
