Can you paint/stain laminated furniture

I have a set of drawers that are very ugly I bought when I first bought my house and had no money.
They are in perfect order so feels wasteful to get rid of them but they are hideous.
It’s like laminated mdf? Is there a paint that will properly stick to them I can use? They’d look much better in a different colour

I need to know this too

I've painted a laminate table with chalk paint. It took about 3 coats for full coverage.

You need to use a primer. The internet seems to recommend Zinsser.

Thanks

I think I would sand and prime?

Bluntness100 · 16/09/2018 17:03

Use chalk paint, you don't need to sand and prime. You'll need two coats. Don't worry when you see the first go on. The second just miraculously dries smooth and patch free.

I did some mdf wardrobes.

I've painted loads of cheap mdf furniture with chalk paint, and it looks really smart. I rough it up a bit with sandpaper first, and the paint sticks well. The first coat looks awful, the second is like a miracle.

Chalk paint -no need for sanding or priming then

Davros · 16/09/2018 18:29

I'm getting chalk paint ASAP. Can't wait to have a go with it

Suggestion: you will need to ‘finish’ chalk paint.

A wax is the usual finish. However, it is difficult to apply and does not set for a few eels. And is not over durable.

I suggest polyvine Matt varnish (it isn’t shiny) - easy to apply and dries within the hour

Palmer1983 · 16/09/2018 19:32

You need shellac based undercoat then can cover with any other paint

StacksOfBoxes · 16/09/2018 20:13

Yep, quick drying matt varnish works for me too. I find it easier and much more hardwearing than wax.

Kdubs1981 · 20/09/2018 21:13

Second chalk paint.

Lacquer/varnish for more hard-wearing finish

wilkos sell cupboard paint £12 a tin , I am in the -very slow- process of decorating my kitchen and have used it to paint the cupboard doors duck egg blue its easy to use if you put it on with a paint pad . It has a very high VOS though .
No sanding or priming needed first.

I was coming on to suggest Wilkos kitchen cupboard paint. Did a few items a couple of years ago and it's worn very well.
