What colour carpet for a very grey room (pics)

I've decided we need a carpet in our living room I hate the laminate that's there and the cost of a decent sized rug to cover it is the same as it would be to carpet.

We had the rest of the house carpeted last year, all the same colour grey but I really don't think it will work in here.

Any suggestions to what else might work? It can't be too light as I have 2 under 2.

I'd go with a similar colour carpet to the laminate, keep a bit of warmth there. Will match your wooden mantel and furniture too.

Navy?

Mrsramsayscat · 07/09/2018 08:19

You definely need to keep some warmth. Personally I would buy a large rug, possibly with cream and yellow tones. A pattern would hide dirt.

How bout this

I live that rug but I think carpet will be much closer plus quieter when my toddler throws his toys on the floor and wakes the baby!

I like the idea of natural colour like the laminate.

Maybe a striped carpet? My friend has just redone their lounge and sofas very similar to yours and have a striped carpet looks really nice.

Maybe a bit like this got the grey tones in still

A herringbone carpet would look great in there.

elmo1980 · 07/09/2018 17:36

Great ideas thanks will look into stripes and Herringbone though suspect they might be a bit pricey?

A beige might work well. We bought a house with beige carpets and we have the same colour sofa as you. Pale grey walls and teal cushions. If you didn't have children I'd say light cream but it's not very practical!

Bluesheep8 · 08/09/2018 08:57

I think an oatmeal colour too, a cool toned one or maybe with some grey flecks in it

I'm going with a mid beige in my grey living room. All my picture frames are oak, and they look lovely with the grey walls.

slinkysaluki · 09/09/2018 14:08

A soft gold carpet would look nice

elmo1980 · 11/09/2018 06:36

Great ideas thanks, going to look at carpets later.

I've just had a bit of a panic about having a different colour in the living room to everywhere else in the house does this matter?

is there another carpeted room that leads into lounge? As long as there isn't I'd go for similar to rest of house. If there is another carpeted room that leads into lounge you need totally different or to replace other carpet (similar but not quite the same would look very weird right next to each other).

amyboo · 11/09/2018 08:16

Just a side note, but you might be glad of the laminate when you start potty training.... The number of "accidents" that my 3 kids have had on the lounge floor - would have been a nightmare if we'd had carpet.

elmo1980 · 11/09/2018 11:56

homeofmyown trouble is the carpet in the rest of the house is grey Grin even if I paint the walls a different colour (which I can't be arsed to do) it might look a bit odd with the sofas, or would it?

Good point about potty training too though won't be doing that for a few months but god, don't know what to do now!

TBH if you have a baby I'd wait until they are older before you put any carpet down. It looks nice enough to me as it is. You may well change your mind over colours in a year or two.

I think all grey is very hard to work with. I'd go for pale cream carpet. We've always had that but had a very firm 'no shoes and no food in living room' policy which was the only way to keep it clean.

So when your child starts walking around with beakers of juice or whatever or is potty training, cream is hard work.

LynetteScavo · 11/09/2018 17:00

If you have a baby and toddler I'd definitely wait a few years before investing in a carpet.

Missnearlyvintage · 13/09/2018 16:44

We've always had carpet in the lounge with small kids, it's been fine.

A warm brown would be pretty. I'd take that picture into your local carpet shop and have a look for something which is a similar shade. I'd go with something that wasn't such a red tone for a little bit of a change, but wouldn't change too much seen as you've already got all of your style sorted in that room.
