50 shades of grey - help!

I’m doing up the hall, stairs and landing. We’ve chosen a grey carpet ( after much deliberation,) and now I’m struggling on what colour for the walls. DH is colourblind and so has delegated the choosing and descisions to me.

Its currently white and will have pale laminate on the floor downstairs. We are keeping the woodwork white and there is a lot of it - narrow hall and stairs in a 1930’s semi with loft conversion.

Have considered pale green and duck egg.. DD wants pink and friends have suggested beige Hmm so would be very grateful for some more suggestions.

Will try and attach a sample of said carpet...

Lilac

I'd get a lovely fresh wallpaper maybe?

Snowglobes · 05/09/2018 21:02

You can have different colours in different rooms. It can still flow really well as long as each colour has the same tonal weight. There’s no reason why your DD can’t have a soft pale pink in her room and you have a similar weighted duck egg blue. Your grey carpet is quite neutral so I think you can choose any pale/gentle colour.

thank you, its just the stair, so all essentially one space. I don’t have the skill/ budget for paper so I think we have to stick with paint. lilac is interesting! ( Can tell DH its grey... and Dd will be happy!)

I have grey carpets and white walls

One room has duck egg blue and mustard (pale) accents and I love it

Another has stronger colour accents - think Orla Kiely colours

Are you having any photos or prints on the walls?

Potato2242 · 05/09/2018 22:45

Gut feeling was duck egg. Or a really muted teal

Holymosquito · 05/09/2018 22:48

ooh muted teal! I like that.

yes to pictures. Think greeny grey/ blue seascape kind of things.

I have grey carpets and perfectly taupe on the walls.

We have grey and jasmine white in a bedroom.

OP - sorry to hijack!!!

@Snowglobes - how can you tell if colours have the same tonal weight? I'm just trying to pick paint colours for different rooms, and I didn't even realise that this is what I'm trying to achieve, let alone knowing how to do it!

Thanks Flowers

Snowglobes · 06/09/2018 13:50

TeamEponine tonal weight is the same as the density of pigment. It’s tricky to explain but if you look at Dulux hints of white range - almond, cornflower etc they all have the same tonal weight. With F&B (to me anyway) colours such as ammonite, skimming stone, borrowed light, calluna all have the same tonal weight/density even though they are essentially grey, beige, blue and purple. It’s trickier with creams.

I'd stick with white or go for very light grey.

Holymosquito · 10/09/2018 13:27

hi all, thanks for all the suggestions. I went to get some testers and ended up with these ( see attached pic). I’m thinking of going for the green (no 1) but would be grateful of your opinions. Is it too strong? There is plenty of light and white wood work/ceilings etc but should I be thinking of something with a lighter tonal weight?

That green looks very stronger, when it's on the whole wall it will be fierce. Pick two shades paler then you think looks right.
However I would always go for a neutral off white in a hallway so it doesn't clash if you want different colours in the rooms. Try and get extra tough emulsion as it will take a lot of wear and tear.
