Hi

So I am really rubbish at decorating and furnishing. I don’t have any ‘eye’ for it at all!
I have a very spacious place with the potential for it to look great but I just have no clue what to do! I either will pack out a room and it looks too cluttered or have nothing in it and it looks empty. I don’t know what kind of furniture to put in. Nothing. I have a large L shaped living room with 2 wooden beams in the middle and all I have in there is a sofa, tv and stand, little table and a rug. Kitchens and bathrooms are fine they usually build up by themselves if you know what I mean, but my living room I’m lost. Also I might add, the hallway into my living room is very narrow so it limits what I can get through.

Any advice we’ll and truly welcome.

Thanks I’m advance

Hello,

When I’m decorating a room I think of it as adding layers. So I will start with the things that are essential to how the room will be used. A living room will usually have a TV, media unit, enough seating for the family and maybe occasional chairs, coffee table, storage for them kids toys etc. Then I think about adding soft furnishings like a rug, cushions, blinds/curtains. Next is lighting, so ceiling pendants, maybe softer wall lighting or table lights as most people like to relax and feel cosy in their living room. Finally I think about art work, accessories and plants.

If your not sure about what style of interiors you like then Pinterest is a good place to look and see what other people have done. Let me know if this helps at all? Lisa x

A good tip for large rooms is to move furniture away from the walls. What is your sofa like? Could you add an armchair at 90 degrees, and put the front feet of both that and the sofa on the rug?

Who lives there? Do you need toy storage etc?

Thanks for the advice. Pinterest! Yes great idea! Lighting not so as it’s all in the wall spot lights etc. It’s quite hard to fit around them actually.

My sofa is quite small as I can’t fit even the smallest of two seaters through the hallway and I don’t have a window big enough to get through (stress) there is me my partner and son. Toy storage isn’t necessary he keeps it all in his room and we have a cupboard (small room) where a lot of stuff is kept. It’s all so neat and impact it actually seems quite hard to get anything. We think oh let’s get xxxx oh no wait there’s a room for that 🤨

Thanks for the ideas. I’ll have a good sit, look and plan session and defo be looking on Pinterest x

Oh ok, how about a modula sofa? I’ve seen some really nice ones online. I’m not sure what your style is but have a look at retailers who specialise in furniture for smaller home like www.urbansize.co.uk. Good luck x

Generally, it helps to use bigger rugs and bigger pictures than you would think - and to hang the pictures low even if it’s a big room

what about a cosy sort of library area in one end of the L? nice comfy armchair, bookcase and a little table?

With poor access you need to buy a modular sofa that comes in seperate pieces. IKEA do one where each individual seat unit, individual back rests and individual arm rest comes completely seperated. I'm sure other brands will do the same. Something like that could allow you to have a large L shaped sofa or two large sofas.

Then add a nice coffee table, some side tables, etc could totally transformation the room.
