I need to buy a feather winter duvet that's good quality but not expensive. Is there such a thing? Any tips on where to look?

I'm not sure how you check. Perhaps google or check PETA or leaping bunny site? I just tend to avoid having them now. I hear John Lewis do a cruelty free one and Next does a good synthetic feather copy.

If you Google the name of the store or manufacturer and the phrase ‘live plucking’ then you should be able to find individual policies. John Lewis and Soak and Sleep certainly have a no live plucking policy as I’ve checked myself when I’ve bought stuff from them.

What size do you need, and what’s your absolute top budget? Alternatively, if you’re looking to maximise warmth cheaply then would you consider an electric blanket?

I've got an electric blanket too. Used it all winter but can't leave it on overnight so need a good duvet so I don't wake up in the night from cold.

I would check out wool duvets. We got ours from Devon duvets and they are great for regulating your temperature and so cosy in winter. Not particularly cheap but great service and a quality product. John Lewis often stock them I think. Some reviews mention a smell at first but we never had an issue.
