Hello everyone. We are doing the first bit of painting in our house since we moved in in September, and now I have the bug and want to do it all!

Until this week, we had the same beigy creamy colour in every single room (along with the exact same curtains in every room) so I am desperate to mix it up a bit.

This room here is one we want to use as a study/snug and occasional guest room. It will be the third spare room (thanks, infertility!) so the bedroom qualities are secondary but it will be important for guests to be comfortable.

It's not a big room - 3.5m x 3m.
All furniture in the photos will go (built-in cupboard to stay for now).
The window is quite large but it is north facing and not a lot of light gets in because it's sandwiched next to an adjacent wall.
As you can see, there are no features. Even the door is depressing Grin

I am debating a dark and cosy theme - along the lines of F&B Downpipe paint, with mustard yellow/teal furnishings, a day bed like this one, lights as attached, and office furniture like this range from JL, but for a lot less money!

However I've never done anything anywhere near that 'daring' before and always err on the side of off-white, light and airy. But we now have a large-ish house and I thought experimenting with one small room might be fun.

What do you vastly more experienced and talented people recommend?? Would a dark colour like Downpipe or similar be awful?
Would love to hear your thoughts, both on decorating colour schemes and furniture and furnishings. Thank you :)

Sounds fab, I'd go for itGrin
Instead of the white daybed I'd have a black one or as small sofa bed

Also have a look at homes on Instagram for ideas

Also look at places like matalan , Ikea , argos , Wilkinson etc for cheaper accessories
Will see if I can find a similar desk to the one you linked

Forgot to say that Ebay is also good for cheap rugs, cushions etc

They also sell on eBay
Also I always get my f & b matched in a trade paint

I also thought of the daybed and love the accessories colors

But I think that paint is a few shades too dark and will be unforgiving

Have a look here as well for ideas

Oh wow, thanks so much Justaweeone, that is awesome help!

Some lovely things there on Etsy and Three Little Pigs - definitely better value than John Lewis.

That Made.com sofa bed is a gorgeous colour, I just wonder if it will cope with two adults or be comfortable enough to lounge on with a book. Still, I'll broaden my search to sofa beds as well as there are probably more stylish options available than day beds.

Thanks again! Star

Have just come across this blog which is a room pretty much the same size (although looks a lot bigger) with same light issues and I love it!
She used a Valspar grey and I think it looks gorgeous.

I do worry like Green Tulips that it would be a bit too oppressing though... Maybe a dark sage green instead? 🤔

Love the ideas in Style Squeeze, that's a great site for inspiration. Oh to be so creative and practical!..

Love that blog you found Op, makes me want to redecorate!
I'd definitely go dark, if you hate it you can always repaint but I don't think you will.
Also try charity shops for 50's type furniture, british heart foundation if you have one nearby is often a treasure trove.

I've just painted part of my lounge a dark valspar navy / teal and I LOVE it. It goes so well with brass, grey, creams or yellows. I think I picked chic shadow and it's a beaut of a colour. Downpipe was too blue grey for me.

FritzyMousey · 14/08/2018 23:25

I do think you maybe need to have high ceilings to get away with all 4 walls being so dark but you could try it with one or two first, it might look nice colour blocked with a pink on the other walls?

FritzyMousey · 14/08/2018 23:31

Or with some white walls and some pink like here
