Does anyone have A DFS sofa? Would you recommend them?

I'm thinking of buying the jersey sofa from them. Been in store to try it out. I think it's great but OH thinks it's too soft.

I have a DFS sofa but not the one you mention. It's a great shape and size and does what we need. You do however need to fluff the sofa cushions (ones you sit on) all the time. Some of the stitching came apart about 6 months after having it and when someone came out I mentioned in passing about how flat the sofa cushions were. He showed me how to fluff properly...which involved taking them out of covers and doing all sorts about once a week! He said you needed to do that with all dfs sofas. Not sure how true this is. This was about 8 years ago. It's still going strong but is very worn and sofa cushions are sad. We need a new sofa but for now we're stuck with it.

My friend has the one you're looking at (I think - looks the same, I'm about 90% sure). I said how nice it looked. She said how much she loved it in the shop but that now she has it she hates it as it's too soft and she always sinks into it and she finds it uncomfortable. She said they'd be getting a replacement in about a year and that I could have it. Sadly I declined as it's not big enough for us and we don't have space for two sofas.

Thanks for your reply MaverickSnoopy. The sofa I'm looking at (Jersey) is on display smack bang in the middle of the shop when you walk in. It's the first one everyone sits on, and everyone comments on how they like it. I'm thinking everyone gets seduced into liking it, because it creates so much attention.

OH wants something harder. I'm starting to think he's right.....

Is the sofa you have still available at DFS? I'd love to have a look if it is.

That one has fibre filled cushions. Don’t buy a sofa with fibre filled cushions (the really soft stuff like a pillow which you have to fluff) from anywhere. Well, unless you want to be fluffing all the time (bloody hard work with the size of some cushions) and still have it go completely flat and lumpy within a couple years at most.

Our sofa was from DFS, it’s 10 years old. The frame and fabric are still going strong but the fibre filled cushions quickly ended up flat, uncomfortable and nothing like the cosy sofa we saw in the shop. Finally we were sick of even looking at it and thought about buying a new sofa. In the end we bought some sofa foam online and replaced the fibre cushions with foam. Wish we’d done it years ago, it’s like a new sofa now!

Fibre filled always look nice and cosy in the shop but the fluffing will drive you round the bend and prove to be a complete waste of time when it ends up flat and lumpy despite your efforts.

WiltedDaffs thank-you so much for your advice! What you said makes sense. Fibre filled are a defo no no now.

Do you think a foam filled cushion will be better? My second choice of sofa is the Eliana from DFS.

OP we have a corner sofa (curved not a pointy corner) and I've had a look but they don't stock it anymore.

I suspect based on what the PP has said that ours is fibre filled. My parents have foam cushions and have had their sofa for the best part of 40 years....not sure if the modern ones are made to last in the same way or not.

I REALLY want a new sofa now!

Oldraver · 13/08/2018 11:13

I'm on my second DFS sofa..current one is 11 years old. First one had foam cushions, still in good nick when we got rid..it was the piping that wore. The sofa eventually collapsed in th middle hence getting a new one though it was 12 years old. The only thing that bothered me was having to straighten the cushions all the time as they would slip

So this time I have had one with cushions that are built in..I would definitly have one the same

Kismett · 13/08/2018 12:38

I can’t speak to DFS but I’d definitely recommend a sofa that’s on the firmer side. Not only will it soften a bit over time, it’s better for your back. There are loads of sofas now that looks so comfortable and inviting because you can sink into them, but it’s not good for you.

sureitsgrand · 13/08/2018 12:46

Have a 4 year old foam filled one. It still looks good. It's comfortable. But I have always felt the frame is flimsy. Anytime anyone larger sits on it I'm aware of it groaning and terrified the legs will go. But it's not happened so far!

Pinkstars2501 · 13/08/2018 17:55

Ours is DFS, not the one you’re looking at. We went with foam seat cushions and they’re great. We did go with scatter cushion type back though, which I wouldn’t next time. I’d go for foam back with a few smaller cushions.
The sofas are great though, very comfy and you can slob out on them, stitching all still intact. They look the same as when we got them, they are only 2 yrs old though.

AnotherOne4 · 13/08/2018 19:52

So I'm thinking definitely a DFS sofa, probably the Freya.

MaverickSnoopy I can remember my grandparents sofa too, they also had it for years! Don't make things like they used to eh.

I don't have yet but thinking to buy one soon.

Balloondog · 18/08/2018 07:04

@AnotherOne4 We have the Freya (corner type). We had it scotch guarded and it's been fantastic at being stain resistant but we've only had it 2 years and I'm forever fixing the cushions back in place as they slide about. We dumped the scatter cushions it comes with for our own quite early on as they just always looked like pancakes! I've also found it to be poorly stitched (joins in odd places) but overall it's cheap and cheerful and does the job.

AnotherOne4 · 18/08/2018 10:42

Balloondog - the Freya as a corner type, is exactly what I'm looking at. We have a very small living room, and I think it'll just about fit.

Can you remember what delivery was like?

OP posts:
Balloondog · 18/08/2018 13:52

@AnotherOne4 Yes, we'd moved here from overseas and had NO furniture so I remember every live long day we waited. They said 3 weeks delivery to us - it actually took more like 6-7! However, once it was actually delivered, delivery and set up was efficient.

Impulsesealer · 18/08/2018 13:54

We’ve got 3 from dfs and all been fine. The leather one is lasting especially well.
Happy with the service too, no pressure.

bellsbuss · 18/08/2018 14:07

Yes I have 3 plus a armchair from there country living range, 2 in the lounge are 6 years old and still in vgc. The 3rd is only a year old, I do hoover and plump the cushions on a regular basis though

bellsbuss · 18/08/2018 14:07

Their

Misty9 · 20/08/2018 20:33

We're on our second lots of sofas from dfs and have always been happy with them. We've just bought the zinc sofa 4 seater in mocha and a 2 seater in the red. Very firm and look fab. Foam cushions I think and we got the scotch guard as it's better to be safe than sorry when spending that much we thought!
