Bedroom furniture - how to find nice things but avoid the matchy matchy!

We've just moved house and I need to fully furnish my bedroom as the furniture that came with isn't suitable/is knackered.

Although the house is new it is a cottage style (part stone/brick) in a tiny village and has lots of natural materials - solid oak latch doors, real slate floors downstairs etc.

I want to create a cottage bedroom look - I don't want all of the furniture to match but I don't know where to start with things. Budget not enormous and I am happy to mix new pieces with good 2nd hand.

Wardrobes will be built in by the carpenter (in a style t suit the house) when I have decided where I want them and I want an Edwardian style metal bed frame. I need 2 bedside tables and 2 chests of drawers. I'd also like a blanket box for linen storage.

Do you think painted furniture would be better than wood finish? I am not a fan of pine - but there is already a lot of oak as we have waxed skirts, door frames and doors.

DH has his own room (house has 2 Master bedrooms as we prefer to sleep alone), so it is entirely my choice in this room. And only my stuff to accommodate!

I have seen some curtains that have a neutral base with a soft duck egg print on which I am in love with. Walls can be painted whatever I like in 6 months time - they are magnolia for now but that doesn't have to stay (can't paint it though until all the snagging completed by builder).

Please help - I don't want to end up with an Oak Furniture Land matchy matchy horror but having been so involved with kitchens and bathrooms for the last 6 months all inspiration has evaporated!

Where to start?!

Definitely take your time. Don’t rush it because you feel you need to finish it right now. If you need temporary pieces, look for used furniture that you are happy to replace at your own pace.

I’d focus on getting a good solid bed and then worry about the rest. Don’t get a bunch of new furniture from one store, take your time finding pieces that you like, have a look at secondhand sites/stores. Painted finish sounds nice for a cottage look.

Look on eBay for painted/restored furniture. There are many small companies that do this.... results are lovely.

Alternatively, the likes of West Elm, Ercol, Swoon, all have coordinating furniture without being matchy.

Have fun! I'm in bathroom hell myself at the moment and enjoying browsing for bedside tables as a distraction!
