What is it you love about your home? What makes you simple when you step in the front door?

I'm lacking in something and don't know where to start. I've had the hall painted a lovely stone colour which I love (dulux cookie crumble) and I know I need to declutter and have the living room painted but you know some homes have just hot that something that makes you almost wish it were yours....? Looking on Pinterest just gives me totally OUT homes, not normal homes where children live or is owned by folk without limit on spending?

Any ideas, photos of your favourite thing?

Light, texture, and colour are key. I would never feel at home without soft furnishings in bright colours and large windows!

In our house as a whole? Decluttering and keeping the place tidy is important to me. I don't feel as relaxed when there are lots of things about, so stepping into a tidy house is refreshing.

As part of that, I like that we've put thought into our home and what we keep in it. We use furniture that makes smart use of the space, and we've thought about what suits our lifestyle. We got a massive sofa because we knew that's how we like to relax and it's our favourite piece of furniture in the house.

In terms of decoration, I like to have a few small things with meaning, usually cheerful items. We both like colour so we have lots of that, plus I like to have one or two seasonal items that I can switch out. We have one little hanging decoration from Next in the hallway and it's so simple but makes me happy every time I see it.

Ultimately I'm not sure that any of that is of use to you. Our home makes us happy because we've taken the time to figure out what we like and furnished it in a way that suits our lives. Don't buy things just because they are discounted or you feel your house is missing something. Take time to consider what makes you happy and then build your house around that.

What do you like about your home? What do you feel you could improve? What sort of atmosphere do you want to create?

When I step in, our medal collection makes me smile - we have it hung in the hall and everyone comments on it. It marks the whole families achievements.
In a few weeks, my lovely new custom built in shoe storage bench will make me smile too! Can't wait for that to be done

Colour, light streaming in through the windows, tidiness and thriving house plants!

I have a lot of my favourite things around i.e. books and candles and nice soft furnishings, houseplants etc. makes me feel relaxed anyway :)

Clarity! It's quite decorated iyswim-strong colours, texture and a bit of pattern, but I can't stand actual clutter. Having a tidy house makes me really happy. Currently fighting like mad to keep on top of baby stuff-even with a strict grip on what's necessary, your needs change all the time.

Small things like the type of doors we've chosen and the bannisters I like. I like my house to look fresh and pretty, things in the right place. Oh and nice furniture - not expensive always but furniture I like the look of rather than things that 'will do'.

I rent so have less control over my home, having moved a few times I’ve learnt how to make a home that’s not ‘mine’ feel mine. I have a very ‘hygge’ approach to my home, comfort and relaxation are key. Lots of mismatched cushions, blankets, candles and fairy lights over a mirror in the living room. Natural wood, light and colour but not too much - mostly blues and teals that are calming. Fresh flowers when I can afford them. I like homes that look lived in and welcoming.

Big windows. Woodburners. All our stuff on the walls - old scroll maps, prints, just stuff we've picked up on our travels. Books, loads and loads of books.

The cat, welcoming me home, or draped artistically on a windowsill.

My living room is cookie dough..love that colour! Love a nice smell. I go crazy if l get any king of off smell when l come in.Its the first thing l notice. So lots of candles. Also love light streaming in and we have lovely big windows which is great.
Nice lamps for low lighting is great too and an open fire blazing( in winter)

I know what you mean about how to make it feel like home. I think personal individual items do that whenever I visit other people's homes I love. Dh hates clutter though so we lack the personal stuff.

I bought a book called How to make a house a home. Might be worth checking out? Lots of emphasis on lighting and efficient use of space from what I remember. Actually, I think lighting is definitely key; on holiday in Scandinavia currently and they do mood lighting brilliantly with lamps and candles.
