Hi all, we moved into our first house last year and are about to embark on painting for first time ever!

We are getting a decorator in to do it since we both work full time and don't have the skills to do a good job, but we have no idea what a reasonable quote would be. Literally no idea if it's likely to be £500 or £2k!!
(We have two people coming next week).

Please could those of you more experienced give me some steer on what you'd think would be reasonable for:

Living room (approx 5m x 5m)
Hallway (approx 8m)
Plus ceilings and skirting boards?

All walls are in a good condition so no remedial work to be done. We'd probably get a qote based on Dulux but are still undecided what to go with.

We are based in the south east, but not London!

All advice very gratefully received, thank you.

I don't know how helpful this is but we are planning to get this done as well. We have a good size two bedroom flat (two double bedrooms) in the south east and we are getting everything done apart from the bathroom, Quote we have is around £2,000 including all paint and materials from someone I know will do a good job.

I would seriously have a go at doing it yourselves. If the walls are in good condition then painting is easy. Just do one room at a time. We've always worked full time but saved money by doing it ourselves. If money is no object, then fine but I'd rather spend the money on something else.

Yes, paint yourself, it wouldn't take long if walls ok.

We've just moved into 1st home too. Stripped all wallpaper and have painted all white. We both work full time too but want to spend any extra money we have on other bits we need.

I'm painting our myself because I'm currently unemployed, however if I was working there is no way I would spend precious's evenings and weekends painting the house. I totally get why people pay to have it done as it's quality of life in that you get to spend time away from work relaxing or exercising or with family etc not trying to move furniture and sod about with ladders, it's also always assumed by the DIY brigade that everyone is able bodied Confused my daughter pays for work to be done as she has a disability that includes chronic fatigue and joint instability, she looks like any other 26 yr old but up a ladder Hmm
I would get your quotes in and see how they differ if your still unsure get a 3rd quote we did with the re-wire we are currently having done. This gives you a good idea if one is strangely cheap or one is disastrously expensive.

Our lounge is 4.6 x 5.1m and cost £220 for walls, ceiling & woodwork. We supplied the paint.

Our hall has been painted for £440 but it's a large hall, two double height walls and a window. He only painted the walls and woodwork.
