Tavertine Bathroom

We moved into our flat a few years ago and haven't gotten round to doing up the bathrooms (small bathroom and en-suite). Both are in good condition - modern looking white sanitaryware and nice chrome taps, but they are totally tiled in beige travertine, with mosaic details. Is this hideously dated?

We are considering selling in 18mos and I'm wondering how much difference it would make to selling price if both bathrooms were updated - there seems to be a lot of grey marble around now. I also wouldn't mind something a bit 'cleaner' looking. We're in a naice area of SW London, so there are lots of very well presented homes. Would a travertine bathroom put you off? My worry is that they were so fashionable around 10 years ago that it really dates things.

If you are thinking of selling in 18 months then you will probably be living there for at least 2 years. You aren't keen on the current bathrooms and as you say, they are looking dated and don't look clean. If you have the money then update them, but do this sooner rather than later so you can enjoy your nice new bathrooms yourselves. Bathrooms and kitchens sell houses.

We are living in a rental with 2 travertine bathrooms. As a rental, it is a plus as it means it looks neat and modern-ish, was fairly recently decorated (last decade, at least!) and it hides dirt very well. Although I, like you, don't personally like it as I find it oppressive.

The house we are about to exchange on this Monday (eeek!) has a blue bathroom suite and matching blue carpet, so it clearly wasn't the bathroom (or the village hall-esque kitchen) that sold it to us. We will be redecorating straight away!

I think unless you are selling to a high spec ready to live in customer, it shouldn't make too much difference, as whatever you choose may not be to their taste anyway.

Sell that blue bathroom suite on eBay - seriously, they are sought after by some people!

@wowfudge ooh really? Good hint! The kitchen is a very old Howdens one as well so might stick that on ebay too!

Stick them in 10 day auctions starting at 99p, buyer collects and payment on collection. If nothing else you don't have to take them to the tip or pay for a skip. I found auctions ending on Sunday afternoons were particularly good for that kind of thing.
