If your lounge doesn’t have a fireplace, what do you use as a focal point?

Can you show me some pictures?

Our current house has a huge open fire but we’re looking at a house with an ugly fireplace and electric fire, they’d have to go.
So thinking about options.

I’d really like a log burner long term but we’d need to do other things to the house before spending money on that.

Wondering about removing the fireplace entirely ...

We removed our fireplace a year ago. Still waiting on the perfect piece of furniture to go along that wall. I know exactly what I want but it doesn't seem to exist and I'm considering having it specially made. In the meantime, DP has ordered something from a local place which I hope will be good enough but I'm not holding out much hope...

Anyway, not much help, so I guess what I'm doing is waiting for someone else to come alongGrin

I’m afraid it’s our tv! We don’t have any interest in fireplaces and wanted a fairly large tv. I can’t do a pic yet because we aren’t done, but it sits on a low, modern cabinet. Then I want to paint the wall behind either dark grey or dark blue, and put up art around. A gallery wall I suppose?

I had a large tv previously and I was surprised at how well it melted into the dark colour behind. So I’m hoping the focal point will be the tv if it’s on, but the gallery wall if it’s off.

Something a bit like this!

Our pool table. But then we don't have a sofa either. We have the pool table some chairs and a desk

Yes something like Kismett posted.

I don’t get the point of the crappy little gas fires and would have loved to rip the one out of our house. We have one here in Texas FFS and in 5yrs have never lit it. Came close last year but couldn’t turn it on and upon inspection it seems the gas pipe has been sealed off but we can use it with wood. Not tempted to do so. Total waste of space and would add about 2ft depth to the room and 5 feet across if i could take it out.

I can see a big built in with shelves and cupboard to hide everything and set the TV into instead

Thanks for ideas.
Like the feature wall kismett. I love Hague blue, have B &Q knock-off version upstairs and that might work well.

Needtimealone - no pool table!!

I love Hague Blue! I think that could look great. Post a pic of whatever you decide to do in the end, and good luck!

We have a chimney breast but had to take the fireplace out when we renovated the house. There’s nothing there now, we have an arm chair there. I keep thinking we should install a fire place but I don’t think we’d ever use it and then the arm chair would have to go!

I guess ours is the TV too but as its not a particularly large one, other items in the room don't seem to compete - photo feature wall to the left, large indoor plant to the right, brightly coloured rug on the floor...

LittleWingSoul · 03/08/2018 20:09

Am toying with buying a surround to replace the 70s fire as a feature in our new house though, we are knocking out all the chimney breasts as the edwardian fireplaces are long gone but am trying to persuade DH to keep the one in the living room for the above purpose!
