Does anyone have a free standing kitchen?

Do you love it? I am thinking of getting one as I think fitted is so expensive, I think I just need a big larder unit a couple of freestanding units and an island possibly.

I don't have one as I'm currently renting. I would quite like one. My Grandmother had one and it just seemed to make sense. Plus you can take the units/furniture with you when you move (although in practical terms you would then have to remove whether kitchen had been fitted and your own house may be less attracting to buyers as a result).

Thank for your reply, i don't plan to sell I just like the look of the freestanding ones so if i want to I can change around a bit, also come out much cheaper than fitted.

We have a few freestanding Habitat beech units, sink and wall cupboards. They are about 17 years old and although we are now in the process of extending our kitchen we are planning to reuse them and fill in the new space with some fitted floor to ceiling units. They have been an excellent purchase and come up beautifully if they are sanded down and oiled. I can see they are not for everyone but they suit us.

I’ve had freestanding before and really liked them. If changing a kitchen, that’s what I’d get.

My friend does & loves it. I don't know where she got it from though

Do Ikea still do freestanding ?

Mrsdarcyiwish10 · 20/07/2018 08:00

Yes they do, I was looking at them the other day and they look great, I think I will definitely go for one

Yep, I have the old Ikea Varde (I think that’s the name). Got it second hand and it’s great, but doesn’t look as tidy as a fitted because the pots are on show and we’re too lazy to line them all up properly/hide the ugly ones etc.

KERALA1 · 20/07/2018 08:04

We got a freestanding one from ikea for a few years before we did a big knock through. It was fine in some ways better as you can clean behind /underneath. Saw a picture in a magazine and copied it exactly, pale Lino, pale wood and white ikea cupboards cream oven that looked like mini range. Expect LOTS of hmmm comments though especially from the older generation!

This range. But customised to put a sink and hob in etc.

I do- it's from an independent chap in Sussex. We have a large cupboard with worktop and a small cupboard- both freestanding. Then a cupboard containing the Belfast sink and 2 cupboards containing the washing machine and dishwasher. Plus 3 wall cupboards. It all came to approximately £1500. It is all very sturdy and made of pine (?) or another wood- so it smells lovely in the cupboards too.

My DPs do. They bought some gorgeous antique pine cabinets and had them renovated. They have two enormous three-door larder cupboards and a couple of low units which have granite tops. They live in a 18th century house with quarry-tiled kitchen floor, so it suits the house perfectly.

I slightly wish I'd gone for free-standing in my own kitchen - I think it looks really nice and spacious, as you see a bit more floor.

Although, in practice, you can't move everything around too much, due to plumbing/gas.
