How would you dress this window?

Hi, not sure what to do with our living room window. Faces a moderately busy road, so privacy important. Made of butt ugly white plastic.
Difficult to put up a curtain rail above as we can’t drill in far enough 🙄 not sure why.

I’ve bern wondering about the one way mirror film, but I think in winter when it’s darker out that might go the wrong way.
Wondered about a plain net from under the small windows, but not sure how to fix it up.

You can buy net tension rods if you wanted to put Andy up.

Ginorchoc · 10/07/2018 14:59

Net up Grin predictive text!

ajandjjmum · 10/07/2018 15:01

No true corrielover would be so vile!

OP - whatever you do, I would make sure that it didn't cover the glass when fitted, so that you didn't shut out any light. Although I get that it's difficult re. privacy.

Coldhandscoldheart · 10/07/2018 15:01

God, corrielover, it’s not that bad! 😂
It doesn’t have any graffiti. It’s just a fugly window with that horrible blind up.
I wondered about a tension rod, but all the ones I’ve seen are quite thick.

And aj has the problem. Privacy is really an issue, as is light.

Sparklyshoes16 · 10/07/2018 15:03

I think there's ones that still let light through on those film things? Otherwise as pp suggested maybe a rod with voile type material?

PickAChew · 10/07/2018 15:05

Could you mount a roman blind in the recess?

You can also get poles that mount from above.

Deux · 10/07/2018 15:06

Wooden plantation shitter would be nice.

You could also try curtains but have a pole that extends beyond the window so that the fixing brackets are just past the window recess. You could also have a privacy/light filtering roller blind for privacy/glare.

Deux · 10/07/2018 15:07

Oh god. Terrible typoShock

Shutter.

Choosingusernamesishard · 10/07/2018 15:13

Plantation shitter 😂

Vitalogy · 10/07/2018 15:19

Have you got the right drill bit and setting. Are you drilling through brick?

Vitalogy · 10/07/2018 15:22

Is this a new thing, window hate. I don't get the hate for slat blinds either.

Coldhandscoldheart · 10/07/2018 15:28

@Vitalogy I think so (although setting? Not sure about that, what would we need?) We get so far, then hit something impenetrable. When we moved in the curtain rail was hanging off - I think the previous people had the same problem along with their inability to use a spirit level.

Coldhandscoldheart · 10/07/2018 15:29

I looked at plantation shutters, but I think they might cut out too much light.
These current blinds keep out a lot of light, and also don’t work very well, because I’ve cut all the strings because babies.

PickAChew · 10/07/2018 15:31

Old brick often has tiny pebbles in. Impossible to drill through straight!

Choosingusernamesishard · 10/07/2018 15:33

How about a transparent blind? We had one in DD room and it gives total privacy but lots of light.
Something like this: transparent blind

Vitalogy · 10/07/2018 15:45

I think so (although setting? Not sure about that, what would we need?) There's a little hammer by the setting switch on the drill. Although as PickAChew said, the pebble issue. I think this was the case in my kitchen, the lintel over my kitchen door, I gave up.

Deux · 10/07/2018 19:12

You also get a type of reverse roller blind that pulls up from the bottom.

Ooo. @Deux, that is interesting.
