Ivory like fireplace or dark like floor, but might be tricky finding exactly the same colour, so ivory might be safer choice.

I like this light oak TV unit from Indigo Furniture as opposed to a painted unit. Are you looking for a matching ‘set’ of furniture or different colours that complement each other?

Oak furniture land has a range in mango wood which we have. We have pale grey walls, an oak mantle above a black wood burner. It look s fab as it isn't orangey varnished! We got a small set of drawers and a stereo unit too.

Ivory like woodburner?

pickingdaisies · 07/07/2018 08:38

I wouldn't try to match the floor, it would make that corner very dark compared to rest of room. I would use ivory to tie in with woodburner and bookcase, but if you want to go with wood, the unit that killerqueen posted is the right sort of colour. But you'd need a good light oak or it wouldn't match the mantel, and that could be pricey.

Probably ivory, as pp said, safest option as easier to acquire.

Ivory like that lovely log burner!

WildIrishRose1 · 07/07/2018 08:51

OP would you consider painting the unit? I had a unit much darker than yours and I gave it a line wash effect, using diluted paint. The stripping was a bit of a pain, but it was well worth it!

thefootofourstairs · 08/07/2018 15:51

dh suggested that wildirish but i'm not sure how to do it ?

It would be really easy to paint and you could change the knob if you wanted to.

You'd need to use either a chalk paint (Annie Sloan or Rustoleum are both good) and then a wax or mat varnish on top, or any eggshell paint.

pickingdaisies · 08/07/2018 21:41

Just to add, if you use chalk paint you don't need to sand or strip it first, wash with sugar soap and rinse with clean water. Use a small paint roller if you don't want brush strokes, or for speed. If you then use wax, it sort of cures and creates a really good finish.

mamapud · 08/07/2018 23:16

I'd paint what you already have with a ivory chalk paint. Will look like a totally different piece of furniture. I've done a few bits and have been very happy with them.

wowfudge · 09/07/2018 08:14

I wouldn't use chalk paint as the rest of the room is more polished looking and you'd want to match up the finish on your new unit and shelves - which look great btw. Rustoleum do a satin finish furniture paint - I'd use that. With minimal prep: light sanding and a coat of primer, you can get an excellent, durable finish. Use a small gloss roller for the flat areas. I've used the paint on a dark wood fire surround and on pantry shelves which take a bit of a battering and it is very hard wearing.

thefootofourstairs · 09/07/2018 21:09

I think i will give it a go Smile
