How to paint over colour blocking

We were on The Great British Interior Design challenge a while back. Our living room was given geometrical designs in dark colours, scattered over the walls. We're now getting a bit tired of it. What's the best way of painting over blocks of dark colour? Someone told me to feather round the edges 1st but i'm not sure what that means

Can I guess that you live in a period building? You were very brave.
A friend's house 'auditioned' but wasn't chosen.
I would use cheap emulsion in white or magnolia, paint a couple of coats and then use the final coat.
Depending on the area you could paint over the dark areas only.

No, a modern place, and it was fun. But we want to go back to 'normal'

I had a blue bedroom when I moved here. Walls and ceiling were a transit van blue (if you're old enough to remember it) and I just painted over it in white. It took a few coats.
Don't believe any one coat label on the tin, it will probably take 3 or more.
I'll never want to paint a wall blue.

Not an expert, but do use good quality paint. I have very painful memories of painting about 17 coats of cheap white emulsion over an orange wall. It may seem expensive but will possibly save your sanity and/or your marriage.
