Polypropylene carpet anyone?

I went to look at carpet for the whole house today expecting to choose 80/20 wool as always.
The salesman has done a pretty good job of making me consider polypropylene though. He says it is much improved since the early days and much better stain resistance. Two cats and 5 lots of stairs to take into account.
Has anyone got polypropylene? I am looking at Abingdon carpets Love story collection.

I would love to hear your experience, advice and reviews of any carpet type - wool or polypropylene- would be appreciated. This could be an expensive mistake.......

Yes, have bleach cleanable ones, 100% polyprop.

Love them, have thicker pile one in the lounge which is hard work to hoover but super soft underfoot, you wouldn't know it was polyprop. They have come a long way.

I know this was discussed on Property/DIY threads, and lots of people raved about them.

Thank you Lee. I have just been reading reports about them flattening and the cut ends becoming fuzzy. Have you experienced that?

Good and bad for each. Wool carpets are less stain resistant and normally more expensive. And can be targeted by carpet moths.

Polypropylene carpets produce poisonous gases when they burn. And they burn really fast. So if you smoke, have an open fire or a log burner, or are sometimes careless with candles, probably not a good idea.

Following as we are considering replacing our wool with kingsmead easy clean adore carpet which has a thick pile. And double twist or something

donajimena · 30/05/2018 13:43

I have polypropylene carpets. They don't look cheap. I would never have wool again after a carpet moth infestation.

SluttyButty · 30/05/2018 13:46

We had them fitted last year throughout the house. Ours are bleach cleanable too. Very happy with them so far and after several months of constant trampling on them, there's no flattening which I did notice fairly quickly with the last lot. We have twist pile this time.

I have wool ones, and am also struggling with carpet moths that are munching their way through with grim determination, despite multiple insecticide sprayings.
When I replace my carpets, I will definitely be going for either synthetic carpet, wood, tiles,or laminate flooring - anything but bloody wool!

Have no issues with any fluffiness going on. Mine is a saxony carpet I think.

Had it down 2 years in the lounge, looks amazing. Bedrooms have a shorter pile, same carpet though.

My friend's parents had carpet moths, didn't realise until they had eaten their way under a large display unit. The moths had started at the back and it became visible when they emerged from the front so when the cabinet was emptied and moved the damage was severe. They had to have their house sprayed.

That helped persuade me over to 100% polyprop. No regrets. I have had cheap carpet in the past, this wasn't cheap and it looks and feels amazing.

Like others got a moth invasion. Have now got a new build and it came with carpets of wool apart from a few we had to carpet ourselves. Would 100% recommend polypropylene. They are much cheaper. Got ours from John Lewis.

Cannot recommend highly enough

Hmmm, that's very interesting stuff. Has anyone had theirs 5 years or more? I am worried about the flattening and tuftiness. I'm doing the whole house so would love to get 12 plus years out of it.
Thank you

We had a cheaper saxony pp carpet in the old house and that had definitely worn and flattened a lot by 5 years if that's any help.

This one is a twist pile but a lot more expensive and we had 10mm underlay put down to extend its life. This meant we then had to get a carpenter in to shave all the doors down because we couldn't close them not great when sat on the loo and the bathroom door wouldn't close

Missnearlyvintage · 07/06/2018 13:48

We've had our polypropylene carpet down in the lounge for about 2 years now. I can see shading in the doorway when the pile has flattened (though I was told this would probably happen with any carpet given that it's such a high traffic area), and it doesn't 'self clean' (shed slightly) when hoovered like a wool carpet so it doesn't look as fresh as our 80/20 carpet upstairs, (although the 80/20 carpet has several light stains on that I can't get off). We have had lots of dusty building work going on downstairs so the polypropylene one may look fresh again if we got it professionally cleaned.

We have a Cormar one - a dense short twist pile, and we will consider it again when we re-carpet after renovations are finished. It is really easy to clean when the kids drop random stuff on it, and the cats don't seem to scratch it as much as the 80/20 wool carpets.

Kingsmead do a polypropylene that looks very like a rustic flecked cream wool carpet. I fell in love with it when I was carpet shopping as I prefer the look of the 80/20 carpets, but it didn't go with our scheme. I think there are more and more around that look like 80/20 if that's a concern.

UnimaginativeUsername · 07/06/2018 13:53

I have polypropylene carpets atm but I hate them. They just don’t look as good as 80/20 ones, and I would never clean them with bleach anyway. I’d get a wool mix if I were replacing carpets again.

egdehsdrawkcab · 07/06/2018 20:11

I am going for a Nylon carpet having been talked into it by a very good independent shop owner. Also lots of stairs and split landings! I had wool loop in my last house and it bobbled terribly, also moths....

This is a much flatter look, but I'm assured it won't flatten!

Elsatree · 09/11/2022 13:29

Has anyone any experience of Sedna carpets made from recycled nylon fishing nets ? Sounds a really good green idea to remove plastics from the ocean, but wondering how they fare as carpets for cleaning and wear and tear ?

Same here, did the whole house and put the highest grade of underlay in every room whether it was high traffic or not. I love my carpets and they're wearing very well as in there's no wear at all three years on.
