Help choosing carpets

Hi all,

I've found so much useful information on the site over the years that it's about time I signed up and joined the fray.

We're currently renovating our house and are now at the carpeting stage. We have a master bedroom to do and the stairs and landing.

Having browsed many samples at various stores in Shropshire, we had settled on Cormar Soft Focus in Starlight colour for the bedroom (it's a light grey polypropylene carpet that's lovely and soft) and Cormar Malabar Two-Fold in Llama colour for the stairs and landing (a nice beige-ish loop carpet that is 100 per cent wool and in a weave pattern).

We'll be using Cloud 9 Cumulus 11mm underlay in the bedroom and Cloud 9 Cirrus 9mm underlay on the stairs (as advised by previous forum threads).

Since picking the carpets, we've spoken to a trio of installers who have all shed doubt. Two of them categorically state not to use a wool carpet if you value long-term durability. The thought of moths, stains, or catching the loop with the hoover is off-putting, yet while reason is telling us to skip the wool, the carpet has so much character that we're wondering if it really would be that bad an idea.

The third installer suggested that we don't go for Cormar carpets at all, claiming that they are poor quality and prone to problems.

Feel like we're back at square one, so we're hoping to get some feedback from people who've bought carpet before. Our questions are:

  • Is wool carpet a bad idea on a staircase and landing? We want something hard wearing and likely to retain its appearance in the long term, plus with a bit of luck there will be kids using it in the near future.

  • Does anyone have any experience of Cormar carpets - any feedback good or bad would be appreciated. Similarly, any recommendations of other well regarded brands wouldn't go amiss.

  • How much is a reasonable price to pay for a good quality carpet? The ones we've chosen are around £25 per square metre from the showrooms, or about £18 per square metre if we order from an online supplier.

We're a no-shoes household and tend to keep things clean, with no pets and no smokers. The renovation has taken a long time, and now that we're nearing the end we want to make sure we make the right choices regarding carpets.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Has anyone had the cormar primo ultra fitted? Also the dolce moda?

Has anyone any experience of cormar primo ultra, or dolce moda or rustic ultra?

@mynd82 and @GreenHatHacker , how are you both getting on with your Cormar Malabar Two Fold carpets after 2 years of wear?

My wife and I are considering it for our hallway, stairs and all of the bedrooms. We have kids but no pets. We love the look/texture but we also want something that is hardwearing and will last for 10-15 years! Would be great to hear how you are getting on with it.

I have polypropylene carpets and love them, been down 3 years and still look like new. It's great that you can pour neat bleach on stains and they come out straight away

Hi! Just reading this old thread as tearing my hair out looking for new durable carpet following an expensive mistake of a lovely Saxony that has gone flat and matted in a matter of months despite no shoes and regular hoovering! Wondering if you can recall the name of your carpet to have a Google. Wonder what the OP settled on? Thanks x

@mynd82 hi OP, it's been a while - how are you getting on with the Primo Ultra? We had Primo Plus in our old house and weren't impressed, but have been assured the Ultra is much better. Thanks!

Don’t go anywhere near Cormar carpets! Dreadful customer service and poor quality carpet! After only a few weeks our carpet was pilling. Looked awful. Spent a fortune and Cormar just don’t want to listen.

@rporzi thanks for the feedback! Do you mind me asking which particular range you chose from Cormar that you had issues with? We are still undecided!

rporzi · 30/01/2024 09:01

It was the Avebury range which in the last couple of months very suspiciously has been discontinued! We had it laid in the hallways and stairs.
This whole business has made me so unhappy and disappointed.

So sorry you've had such a bad experience, I hope it does get resolved for you, and thanks for sharing, going to look for some alternatives.
