Good quality paint

I have been advised to use good paint rather than cheap paint because it is often possible to just use coat of good paint rather than 2 coats of the cheaper stuff.
My decorator wants to use B &Q paint . Is this any good?
All in all what is good paint? Thanks

B&q is fantastic paint! It gives a really good coverage with one coat, one rarely needed to use two. It's cheap, low odour and dries fast. I use the bathroom paint in the kids rooms as it wipes down so well.

Avoid valspar paint.

Once the paint dries it CAN set off a smell of cat pee which is horrific and near impossible to get rid of. Check out online for reviews and B&Q blamed customers who had used professional painters for not priming walls properly.

We just did daughter's walls in Dulux Once paint - very thick but amazing paint.

If your decorator is trying to tell you that you only need 1 coat then you need find another decorator. You will definitely want 2 coats of color, at least, depending on what it's going over. And a decent decorator would be advising Crown or dulux at a minimum, not own brand paint

It is going to be mostly white over pale walls so not too bad. If they have quoted X for the cheaper paint/only one coat shall I just offer another £100 extra for better stuff?

I'm almost certain that you will need 2 coats of white, even over a pale colour.
Definitely get a trade paint, it's not that much more if bought in 10litre tubs. No decorator should recommend b&q white really.

BexleyRae · 11/05/2018 12:47

I would see about getting another quote rather than offering more

Little Greene is expensive but fantastic. Wipes down easily, really worth the extra money.

LOVELYDOVEY05 · 11/05/2018 12:49

What is a trade paint? So you are saying whether cheap or expensive paint I will need 2 coats then?

I second Little Greene, brilliant coverage, however you
will always get a better finish with whatever paint you use if you do a second coat.

BexleyRae · 11/05/2018 12:56

Trade paint is a bit more expensive, but covers better, the colour or whiteness will not fade or discolour like the cheaper ones. Trade paints are what professionals use. But you will always need 2 coats to give good even coverage

It's called colours premium bathroom paint, it's non fade, splash proof and wipe proof, we last used the colour called light rain it's a very light grey and I did our downstairs loo and two walls in my kids room with it and it's lovely. It says soft sheen but it's not shiny.
Avoid Johnstones paint it's awful!

I've used Dulux trade, but two coats for everywhere and it's been great. Vinyl matt everywhere except for bathrooms which are diamond eggshell

dontcallmelen · 12/05/2018 20:59

Dulux diamond matt paint is very good, also Mylands which is a premium paint much better than F&B imo which I am always banging on about😀 excellent quality & coverage & good colour range.

I've used the b&q colours (standard one in the rectangular tub) in a couple of bedrooms. It went on ok, but still needed 2 coats to cover the existing white walls. I probably wouldn't use it again, as it's impossible to wipe any stains off the the wall without the colour coming away, so not very practical. It doesn't work out that much more expensive to buy Dulux and I've found that it wipes down better than the b&q paint. I expect I'll need to re-decorate the b&q painted rooms sooner than than the Dulux, so it probably works out more expensive in the long term ifyswim.
