What colour living room walls (pic included)?

I like cool rather than warm colours and tend to default to painting walls white, but am wondering if pale grey would be better here? I'm also going to paint the currently brown wood skirtings and window frames. I'm thinking white walls with grey woodwork or vice versa. Or does anyone have any other suggestions? I'm a bit unimaginative when it comes to colour schemes! All suggestions welcome.

p.s. I know brown leather sofas are unpopular on MN, but they are brand new and non-negotiable. Grin

With your blue curtains and cushions I'd go farrow and ball 'string'. Would show up the blues beautifully.

Grey is a bit overdone but farrow and ball Parma grey might be nice.

Obviously you don't have to use F&B I'm just using them as an example. B&Q do an excellent colour matching service if you like an expensive colour but don't have the budget.

Eolian · 08/05/2018 17:55

Thanks - will check those out! F&B definitely out of my budget range, but that's a good tip about B&Q - I've never done that before.

Honestly fabulous paint! It's wipeable if you have small children or pets. You order all the smart colour wheels, take in the colour you want and they make it up for you! I did the painting myself and the end result was good (I am no professional!!!)

SenoritaViva · 08/05/2018 18:10

Sorry when I say smart colour wheels I mean expensive! I found the paint library had lovely colours

The other good thing about b&q is they save your colour for you on account so you don't have to remember what you ordered. (Good for my rental property!)

The problem is going to be having a warm brown sofa, which works nicely with your current colours, in a cool coloured room. Also, the teal colours are warm.

SenoritaViva · 08/05/2018 18:51

Agree with mimi which is why I suggested string...

Ps lovely dog Smile

Eolian · 08/05/2018 19:15

Thanks - he goes well with the sofas Grin.

The F&B String is a yellower colour than I had wanted, but I must admit that as soon as I googled it I could see what you meant about it bringing out the blues...

I hadn't thought of teal as a warm colour - to me almost anything bluish seems cool - but I'm a bit of a colours dunce. Hence needing advice!

I love a brown leather sofa. As much as i want fabric it doesn't go well with a toddler.

SenoritaViva · 08/05/2018 19:44

A few ideas here to go with your dog sofa

Thegirlisnotright · 08/05/2018 21:26

Dulux dusted moss 2 might be good. It’s a sort of greeny grey. In this picture you can see some teal accents and the warm brown coloured floor and I think the colours look fab together.

Did you decorate the room to match the dog or get the dog to match the room?

Eolian · 09/05/2018 10:53

Thanks everybody - this is all very helpful!

Grin Weeellll... the new sofas were because of the dog. I figured leather wouldn't absorb doggy smells as much. And he's not allowed to look at go on the new ones, unlike the old ones Blush.

Valspar...warm alpaca. The premium paint is scrub proof. Little goes a long way

therockinggazelle · 09/05/2018 18:49

Brume by Dulux is a lovely colour with white woodwork

Henrysmycat · 09/05/2018 21:18

All colours have warm and cold undertones that decide what the colour is. You can have yellow based greys that are warm and blue based greys that are cold. If your room is north facing go for warm undertones. You teal chrtainsxare warm colour and so is your sofa. Do you have the space btw? You sofa and table look too squashed in the corner.

Ketzele · 09/05/2018 22:11

I agree dusted moss might be good. Also check out shadow white and shaded white (F&B).

Missnearlyvintage · 10/05/2018 13:26

I have dusted moss on my kitchen walls, with a fake teak wood vintage kitchen, and it looks lovely with rich dark wood tones, but I'm sure how it would go with the teal accessories in the picture. In our west facing kitchen dusted moss switches from a light french grey, to a sage green grey, to a blue grey depending on what time of day it is and whether we have the lights on in there or not.

There is a Johnstone's paint colour called sea mist that we have in our lounge which is a light blue/grey/mint colour, and that's nice as well. Without the sage tones that are in the dusted moss, it might go better with the teal accessories.

IMO both colours are lovely!

Eolian · 10/05/2018 13:46

Yes there's plenty of space - that's just one corner of the room really. The table isn't actually usually in that position! I hate the table anyway, but PIL bought it for us...

Thanks again everyone for all the colour ideas. I had wondered about a very very pale aqua to go with the teal. At the moment I'm leaning towards something like the F&B String, but maybe a touch paler. Will definitely check out Dusted Moss too though.
