In our living room we have dark brown sofas, a kind of oatmeal colour carpet and greige walls. The colour of the walls goes really well but we need cushions on the sofa and I just can't seem to get it right.
Any inspiration please?

A lime green would be nice, or a mustard colour

frasier · 31/03/2018 01:58

Mustard or teal. Go for a pattern, if the room is as blank a canvas as it sounds, you could have some gorgeous fabric. Any art on the walls? Maybe pick out some colours or motif from that.

Thank you both.

It is indeed a blank canvas - I don't want it to look too matchy, if you know what I mean. Yet I'm hopeless at achieving that effortlessly stylish look.

I will start having a browse with these colours in mind.......

Here are some ideas for brown sofas.

It might be useful to go through Pinterest or Houzz to decide what style you're after.

Thank you - I've exhausted Pinterest! Although I have saved a few colour palettes to try and work out where I'm going wrong......
I like the idea of teal, but a muted teal if that makes sense, maybe with some mustard too. Aaaargh.......I've already spent too much money and not got it right, can't risk getting it wrong again Confused

Teal OR mustard OR orange. Pick your colour then get non-matching cushions in different fabrics with that colour from a few place. How about Dunhelm, Made, H&M, Laura Ashley, Orla Kiely, Harlequin? I don't think these all go tovether tonally but the mishmash of plain and patterned and fabrics gives you an idea of what I mean.

Then have maybe a lamp or vase in the same accent colour or some of that colour in a rug or as the PP said colourful tables.

Just find a small decorations shop run by a designer - they'll be able to put together a few items for you.

Thanks, that's a good idea about finding a shop..... I will keep a look out.

CountFosco - so just one colour cushion? Although I guess if they're patterned they might have splashes of other colours. I see what you're saying. I thought this would be easy. I guess I also haven't found something I really love yet - previously I've fallen in love with e.g a picture, a curtain etc and that's swayed everything else.

Burnt orange, burgundy and other autumnal tones would be my vote. We have dark brown sofas, oatmeal carpet, magnolia walls. We have gone for neutral linen cushions with embroidery in autum colours, and added colour with a Georgian mahogany armchair with red upholstery (auction impulse buy - darker furniture seems to be quite unfashionable at the moment so is often amazingly cheap at auction), tweed footstool and copper and gold lights and picture frames. Works for us.

Bobbybobbins · 02/04/2018 22:18

We have brown sofas and an oatmeal carpet but with pale blue walls. We have had cushions in - cream (v nice), beige (looked awful), grey (awful), mustard knitted (v nice) and pale blue (nice but a bit matchy to walls)

Bluesheep8 · 03/04/2018 07:31

We've got pale oatmeal carpets and taupe mottled sofas with f and b skimming stone (greige) on the walls. The accent colour I've chosen is duck egg blue and it really works. Also, with a neutral palette, texture is really important so maybe some woollen throws or faux fu if you like it (I do!) A mixture of different sized cushions looks good (We have cream, duck egg blue and some other small patterned ones that complement each other) I'll try to post a pic.

Bluesheep8 · 03/04/2018 07:32

FAUX FUR!

Thank you BlueSheep - our walls are very similar to Skimming Stone (have just used that in the hallway), would love to see a picture if you can....

Thank you BlueSheep - your room looks lovely, very calming and tranquil. I've got a few duck egg bits in other rooms, so I will try them out in the living room! I think as you, and another pp said, different textures and patterns can make a big difference.
Thank you everyone for your advice Smile

Teal is such a great colour combined with neutrals. You can get throws, vases etc all in varying teal tones. TK MAxx is brill for all this stuff and great prices.

Thanks Tinkobell - that looks good.

I thought I had decided on duck egg, but a trip to TKMaxx today revealed some lovely knitted teal cushions..... I'm still on the fence!
