Can a window be too big for a room?

I have a small room which benefits from very little natural light as it is inbetween 2 rooms in the house with no window. The room has a patio door between it and a Sun Room, which we believed would offer enough light, but it does not.
I want to insert a window into the exterior wall of the room, which I am told should give us enough natural light. It won't reveal much of a view as it is at the side of the house and there is just a 4 foot space between the wall and a fence around the house .
I already have a very large window which could be inserted which was taken from another room last year. I have asked the company if they can use that window to save paying for another. They are reluctant as they say that the window is far too big for the room and will take up most of the wall space.
Can a window be too big for a room? I'd be quite happy to have a larger window to increase natural light, but not sure a big view of the fence would be worthwhile? Should we have a smaller one? I don't need any space for storage or for anything else, the wall currently has nothing on it so I am not losing much needed space through having a larger window.
Any thoughts?

I think that a big window with a fence 4ft away would look quite unappealing. You could try painting and dressing the fence, planting a feature plant etc but it's a very, very tight space. And it won't ever be a light room as there's just not enough space for light to enter.

What I think works best with these types of rooms is going with what they offer instead of fighting them - it's a dark room so make it dark and cosy. I've included pics for inspiration.

If you could paint the fence a lighthouse grade white paint it would reflect light into the room.

Due to the layout of ours the small back reception room has a single window which looks out into the yard but at an angle which faces the external wall of the bathroom. Painting that wall a bright white has really helped.

Thank you both for the tips. I think we will need to paint the fence. But I have seen plenty of other properties with side windows facing a very tight space.

I'd have some planting outside to make the view more attractive. Nothing fancy, some bamboo in pots with the fence painted a light colour would do it. Or you could put a film on the window to hide the view.

What is the room for?
You get small rooms with glazed walls so I'm sure it will be ok.

If it’s a small room struggling for wall space why not look at having clerestory windows the length of the exterior wall? They let in an amazing amount of light and can look really stylish, and still lots of useable wall space underneath.
