What colours to go for in the kitchen?

SmileAndNod · 18/03/2018 16:41

We are about to move (new build) and the kitchen is white gloss units and black worktop. Not our choice so plan on replacing in the distant future.

In the meantime I'm stuck for what to go for blind / curtain / accessory wise. I'm quite scared of colour and only really like grey.

Any ideas please? Our last rented house had a greeny colour so keen to avoid that.
I know I need to start buying things quite soon but I feel a bit overwhelmed and lost. Its an empty white box and I have to make it feel like home Confused

We have this with our white gloss kitchen

What about Prestigious textiles magnesium in teal? It’s teal/shades of grey/white.

I do love that member however I can't stretch to £620 for the cherishing curtains alone when we have the rest of the house to doSad

Do you need curtains or blinds at all? Are you overlooked?

My kitchen and sitting room don't have anything up at the windows, because we happen to have a long garden. We've decorated both rooms in brilliant white and gone for a neutral palette in both and they are lovely cheerful spaces.

Just another consideration.

It's understandable that you're anxious. However think about the mortgage reducing year in and out and the security for you and your children. I'd settle in first before making any expensive decorating decisions. Put up a cheap blind from IKEA or Dunelm and then think about what you really want and save for it.

JoJoSM2 · 25/03/2018 21:17

If you aren't that keen on colour, just stick to grey. Nothing wrong with that. To avoid blandness, you could add either texture or pattern.

SmileAndNod · 26/03/2018 06:53

Well I've ordered some paper blinds from amazon as a temporary measure. One of the kitchen windows faces the road, but I can live with paper for a few weeks yet.

DH has decided that he would quite like yellow to go with the kitchenConfused. I think I might buy a couple of tea towels and see how I go with that! I've ordered lots of fabric samples, [[https://www.247blinds.co.uk/indah-onyx-roman-blind]] seems not too costly and grey. Can also get yellow or blue. Or ialso like the dove.

Going to wait now until we're in and see how dark the kitchen is. And then I'll have rest of the house to do as wellShock

I'm not happy or excited as I always thought I would be. I'm filled with dread and worry.

Sainsbury’s have some lovely yellow and grey kitchen accessories at the moment. Would look nice with your kitchen.

I think I would go for neutral for your blinds and curtains. HomeSense often have some nice ones.

We had Ikea curtains in a rented house on patio doors. They were great as cheap and long - house had really high ceilings - and I could hem them myself using that iron on web stuff.

My kitchen is grey painted units and black granite worktops and I have both red and turquoise accessories. Our blinds are stripes with various shades of grey and a bit of red. You don’t have to have a lot of colour. Just touches of colour can lift a space.

Good luck with your move. You do sound very nervous and overwhelmed. Concentrate on the positive. No more landlords. Keep breathing and you will be fine.

I quite like this [[https://www.blinds-2go.co.uk/roman-blinds/21239/madelyn-linen-blue-mist.html]] but after all that there are no curtains to match

There is a window, a patio door and a kitchen sink window all in a small kitchen diner. Would we need all windows to match fabric wise?

We've been in and had a look. Still not sure where everything will go and there will be lots of work to do but I'm feeling a little less daunted. Not quite excited yet though....

That's really pretty. You could have the blinds on the two windows and go for plain curtains for the patio doors.

You sound a bit more positive. Would it help to visualise how things will look when celebrating something nice, like a birthday or Christmas?

Maybeicanhelp · 27/03/2018 21:39

I like that, it's still quite neutral and you can pick out the blue with other pieces. Even a mustard colour would contrast with it.

Does it come in sizes for both windows? Do you need curtains for the patio doors? If so, maybe a plain white voile?

MrsMozart · 27/03/2018 23:41

Very pretty.

Ditto picking a colour out for a door curtain.

@SmileaAndNod I understand completely how you feel, we bought a new build after years and years of renting and our LL decided she needed to sell.
I should have been elated to finally be buying but I found the whole process completely anxiety inducing.

I have a white kitchen with black worktops, but we have an oak floor which warms it up a bit. The great thing about you have a grey floor is you really can go with any colour at all!
The rooms really will seem bigger with your stuff in too, rooms without furniture always look smaller.
I hope you love it when you see it at the home demo. I will keep watching the thread as we still don't have any kitchen blinds despite having moved in 4 months ago.

Ilikedogs · 28/03/2018 01:08

If you already have grey accessories I would probably go with a very pale blue or possibly a pale nude-pink.

Or leave the walls either white or a pale grey and use the curtains/blinds as your areas of colour. Would depend on where they are as to whether you think this would add enough interest to the room.

SmileAndNod · 28/03/2018 06:17

Thank you. NachoCheese that is exactly how I feel. I'm so grateful to have somewhere to live and extremely grateful to be lucky enough to get out of renting. But yes it's completely anxiety and insomnia inducing.

The blinds can be made to measure so I think I will go for them and then like you say pick out a colour for the curtains. Would like something as the dog sleeps in the kitchen and as soon as the sun is up he thinks it's time for a walk😊

So pleased to hear that rooms seem bigger with stuff in. We have a lot of stuff!

Good luck with it, I promise you'll feel better once you're in!
It's such good fun choosing all these bits for your own house too, and knowing it's worth it as it's up to you when you move.
When are you due to complete?

SmileAndNod · 29/03/2018 20:18

We completed today. Have been there most of the afternoon, mostly doing the snag list. Still not sure where everything will go at the weekend🤔

It was not as bad as I was expecting and I feel a little more positive tonight, though very tired as I didn't sleep last night. I've put a doormat outside the front door and two pots of lavender each side so I think I'm practically doneGrin

I completed today too Smileandnod. I hope your unpacking goes smoothly and you are soon settled in your new home. Happy Easter 🐣

CiderwithBuda · 30/03/2018 09:50

Happy new home to you!

A doormat and two pots of lavender definitely means you are done!

SmileAndNod · 30/03/2018 11:40

And you Woollyback - expect you're a bit further in than us! Doing the majority of the move tomorrow (doing it ourselves😮) so still between 2 houses. I just want to be in the new house now so I can start making it ours. And Im waiting for my mum to come visit. Good luck in your new homeSmile
