How do people tackle the redesign/decoration of a room? Our bedroom needs redecorating and after a fairly disastrous attempt a couple of.years back I am looking at getting an interior designer to advise. But it's a lot of money and it made me wonder - how does everyone else approach this kind of project?? I do use Pinterest and houzz but get kind of lost on those and prefer magazines for inspiration. Do You just go for it and not worry too much about how it will all look as a whole? Or angst over every decision like me?! Grin Confused

Pick a neutral colour for the walls and paintwork, f n b are great for a nice chalky expensive looking finish, and if you want to blend, pick other neutrals, like creams and greys for the soft furnishings, linens, curtains and cushions, or if you want to contrast pick an accent colour for the a few of the soft furnishings. Layering is good on beds, with nice throws, but choose expensive ones as cheap ones look exactly that. Try and avoid the griege look though, been done to death. Your focal point is the bed, so if you are buying a new one, you probably need to pick that first. I tend to look around everywhere to see what's available, then i have in my mind what I want it to look like. Then buy! It's easy to change a look with cushions or different bed linen, so I usually have at least 3/4 sets to swap around. I sort of angst over it and then go for it. Most shops will take stuff back if unsuitable unless it's bespoke.

Thanks for the response. Problem is I like rich colours and wallpaper! Hence the angsting. Maybe we'll just pay the designer...

@Misty9 you can now get excellent and affordable interior design help on a room per room basis.

I run a community on Facebook for home renovators (www.facebook.com/groups/homerenovationcommunity) and one of the room by room interior designers we always recommend is roomlab.co.uk/

Just go with bold patterns and colours if you like. Get samples, put together moodboards.
I also love colour and pattern but my tip would be to break it up with sth that gives your eyes a rest from craziness.

I tend to choose my curtain fabric and go from there. In my experience it is much easier to find a matching or coordinating paint colour for a bold fabric than the other way around. Maybe start with a wander round the John Lewis curtain and haberdashery section or similar?

Home interior magazines can be helpful, pin interest or houzz is always worth a look as well & yy mood boards, can be really helpful & you actually see what type of colours/patterns you are drawn too.

I see you have had a change of mind, however for future reference use the magazine pictures to create a mood board to reflect your tastes and visualize your room. Pinterest is fantastic for finding colour schemes that work together because you want a space to flow. Having a suitable colour scheme will impact what you choose to go into your room as well. There are plenty of how-to’s online that can help you be your very own interior designer!
