IKEA Kallax - suitable for clothes storage?

Trying to decide what to do about clothes storage for DS's room (he's 2.5). We currently still have the change table up Blush, which is used as storage for nappies, some bits of clothes and various random things, and a tall narrow chest of drawers for clothes. It's a box room so not a lot of space. We are definitely going to dismantle the change table but not sure what to do for clothes storage.

My first thought was to replace both the chest of drawers and change table with a long, low chest of drawers (a 4 + 3) as DS's clothes don't really need hanging space at the moment.

But now I'm wondering about IKEA Kallax with the drawer and cupboard inserts instead, and getting a set of 2x4 Kallax.

Has anyone used the Kallax for clothes storage? Would you recommend it? I feel it might be more versatile in the long run but also maybe more flimsy?

Third option would be an IKEA Stuva wardrobe and chest of drawers but I'm not sure that would make better use of the space and I'm concerned about blocking the light.

Any thoughts on the merits of Kallax vs chest of drawers?

The Kallax storage boxes are quite deep so they'd be fine if you were always going to use whatever is on top, but I wouldn't want to be rummaging around to the bottom. My mum uses them for her thick jumpers though because there's so much more space than in drawers.

Kondo-style rolling?! Now, why didn't I think of that?

Are the drawer inserts flimsy?

I'm a kallax fan but I would t use them for clothes that you want to access regularly. storage ok. We've used them for shoes and bulky jumpers/coats out if season. They are too deep.

Inserts are ok but not solid enough to function as clothing drawers. They are designed for lighter use.

I've managed to store a lot of clothes in a stuva but I had to buy lots of shelves and pull out boxes etc. It's much easier to see the clothes rolled nearly in a drawer as my other child has.

I don't think the Kallax drawers are that strong.

We use a Kallax exactly as you describe for our 2 year olds clothes. The drawer inserts seem to be fine for his clothes.

I don't imagine we'll use it for his clothes forever, but like you say feel it gives us good flexibility so I think when he's bit older it'll become toy/book storage and his clothes will go in grown up drawers somewhere else in his room.

We have an Ikea pax wardrobe for ds. Has a hanging rail at the top with slide out baskets to use as drawers (Has no room for a wardrobe and chest of drawers in his bedroom)

This is a nice picture of a nursery bedroom with Kallax used as clothes storage

We used to keep dds clothes in the woven ikea Kallax boxes, but I've bought the proper draw inserts for when we move house next week, as it's quite annoying having to rummage in the boxes for clothes and the draws are two to an opening so shallower. I've bought some pretty ceramic knobs to replace the boring ikea ones. I'm undecided on putting a rail in like in this photo, as DD only has a few dresses and is usually in leggings, but it's a shame to crumple them in a drawer.

I use ours for clothes, works well and each drawer holds loads and the bottom won’t break!

WhereIsBlueRabbit · 10/03/2018 12:02

Ok, so maybe that is an option, then.... Thanks to everyone who responded, I'm not sure when I'll next get to an IKEA so may end up ordering online.

My plan was to get maybe four drawers for things like socks, mitts, swimming stuff and so on, possibly also tshirts, and get the rest as cupboards. Am now thinking we'll need to roll trousers though!

We have a 50cm wide pax wardrobe in 17 yr old sons room. Top half rail, then a trouser handing thing then 3 draw inserts. Does a great job even with his huge clothes

Just to throw in another option

I have Alex drawers - the tall set currently but previously had the shorter set

The shallow drawers are fab for socks and underwear (socks folded, folded, enveloped, fits sooo many in)
The deeper ones have t-shirts/my vest tops/tights rolled up etc but would be great for kids clothes - think I can fit 3 rows of 10 vest tops rolled/folded kondo style Smile

Billy bookcases are also good as they have options for doors, aren't as deep and are slim width

My boys both have an ikea malm chest of draws, four big draws - pjs,
Trouser, t shirts and jumpers and then two smaller ones at the top one for pants and one for socks. They've had them since toddlers and are now 6 and 8 and everything still fits in them well! We use the Ikea Kallax to store shoes and hats, gloves etc in the hallway but I don't think I would put clothes in them.

We have Ikea pax in both kids rooms. Amazing floor to ceiling that you customise for what you want
