Help with awkward shaped living room

We've lived in our house for 7 years and over time we've tried many different furniture combinations but we keep ending up with a huge wasted space. I've enclosed the floor plan that we had from the estate agent and apart from the large fire place (we've replaced with a wood burner ) everything else is the same. The door that leads to the room is the front door.

We currently have a two seater sofa under the right window and a three seater along the wall that leads to the stairs. The tv is in the far corner near the door that leads to the kitchen. The other door to the stairs in the waste area is an under stairs cupboard.

The main bit of room is 14ft x11.5ft and the the waste bit is 8.2 x 8 ft

Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks

Mostly questions:

Would you prefer it squared off?
Do you plan to keep the porch?
Do you need the door to the cupboard (do you need that cupboard)?
Could you add some storage, if you remove a door?

I would be trying to reduce the number of doors so that you can zone the room. One zone for proper lounge use - telly and sofas. And one for something else like a kids' play area?

Two thoughts:

Either reduce doors, block off cupboard on
Or take out walls around stairs and have them in living room

StarsBrokenAgain · 08/03/2018 19:33

Not sure about proportions but second about zoning, sofas can work in the middle of the room.

So block off cupboard door, one area in that bit, then maybe sofa directly in front of fireplace if room for a direct path from the door behind it?

I would probably try and turn the wasted area into its own specific zone. For example, could you make it into a study area with a nice desk and bookcase, possibly an easy chair? My parents living room is a different shape but has a similar issue and they’ve done that with it. I can’t say the desk gets loads of use as they’re both retired but it looks like a lovely inviting reading corner. They’ve got a big lamp over a tall wing back chair and it looks really snug.

Same question as above

Can you move the front door to the position of the window in front of the stairs?

A smallish spend would then give you an entrance area that could be sectioned off and a larger area for the sittting room

Thanks for all the replies, to answer a few questions, we have had a new porch so wouldn't want to move the front door, the house also has the original sash windows so I'd be reluctant to mess about with those.

I guess the cheapest (and most probable solution) is to turn the corner into somewhere useful. The toys could work there actually, as they take up a lot of space in the conservatory which could be better used.

In the long term the wall around the stairs could come down which would really open up the space. we don't really use the under stairs cupboard as the door is hobbit sized Grin

How about turning the corner into either a study area or a reading area? So with an armchair?

Then you could have another armchair and a sofa like this

Do u really need 2 doors into the hallway? I would block up the door to the right and use it as a play room/area or reading corner?

Vitalogy · 10/03/2018 13:29

What about keeping the stairs blocked in but getting rid of the cupboard, you'll still have some storage under the actual stairs. Moving the kitchen door right next to the stairs then you'll have more room along that wall. Never ceases to amaze me the way some architects place the position of door ways. Been looking at a lot of these floor plans recently due to move.

DropZoneOne · 10/03/2018 13:31

I'd zone it too. So put a sofa facing the wood burner so you walk behind it to get to kitchen/stairs/front door. Then turn area behind it into a reading/craft/computer/toy area depending on your interests.

Vitalogy · 10/03/2018 13:32

Or get rid of storage cupboard and make a study/playroom with stud wall, you've got that small window there.

PassiveAgressiveQueen · 10/03/2018 13:50

I would put a big see through unit where i have added the red line. Something like this, without any backs on

Yep - take down the cupboard - stud wall and use as a play room - making the most of under stairs storage - add a sofa and TV for grown ups when they go to bed

Corner sofa in front of the fire - use paper to gain dimensions - so people have to walk round the back if not to get to the kitchen -

Cuddle chair by the window and TV near the kitchen door

Lots of low lighting and rugs and soft furnishings to keep it cost

Vitalogy · 10/03/2018 14:15

PassiveAgressiveQueen That's a good idea.
Needs cordoning off somehow, crying out for something with the window there.

PassiveAgressiveQueen · 10/03/2018 15:41

Just a thought opening up the stairs makes the downstairs really cold, as all the heat in your living room goes whoosh upstairs.

Vitalogy · 10/03/2018 17:38

You can still have the stairs blocked in, just get rid of the big cupboard.
