No space for a tall fridge/freezer

We're moving into a lovely house, we just put an offer on and it was accepted. It's in a beautiful area, with a lovely little yard/garden and log burner. The only issue is the kitchen, which isn't very big...there are three gaps under the worktops for a washing machine, fridge and freezer. So we'll be relying on an under counter fridge and freezer, whereas now we have a tall American style one.

Does anyone else manage with an under the counter fridge and freezer? I'm expecting my first baby.

We inherited those with our house and it drove me nuts. We're both vary tall and I hated the squatting in a confined space to get anything out. You'll love that with a big bump. Not. It somehow didn't seem to fit much either... And we're not even fridge people - our replacement fridge tends to be half empty and it's a bit smaller than the American style models.

So yes, I'm not a fan.

Do you have a garage that you could put a bigger one in?

SpongeCake23 · 06/03/2018 08:23

We don't have a garage no Sad

There isn't anywhere else to put one, so we'll have to put up with the under counter ones!

Would it perhaps work to just have your fridge freezer in the same location but cut out the worktop so you have a tall unit instead?

We had the same issue we moved into a house with a smaller gap and had to get rid of our big fridge freezer and now have undercounter ones which i still even a year later hate, far to small have to go weekly shopping instead of previously monthly as the freezer is far to small Hmm very annoying

We have under counter ones and I hate them with a passion. But my aunt has far better ones than ours - I think they are Bosch and they have loads of pull out drawers which does make it easier to access the stuff inside. They’re also wider than normal - think 60cms whereas ours are only 50 or 55.

The ones with drawers are prob more expensive but it’s worth it. Hate mine so much.

Oh dear, I'm not looking forward to this at all now! Sad

We always managed as a family of 4 in the past when growing up.

@JoJoSM2 we might do that eventually, but not short term really.

We do our shopping once a fortnight or once a week, so that isn't a problem. We're thinking of getting essentials once or twice a week to keep less stuff in the fridge that we might not use.

When we moved into our tiny kitchen we moved the worktop and put in a 3/4 size fridge freezer in the gap against the wall.

When we first moved into this house, we used the under the counter fridge. I didn't find it all that small (just the two of us), but I did hate having to bend down to find stuff. In another house we used to have another fridge freezer that didn't go under the counter but was still tiny and I think it held even less. The freezer held very little, less than something under the counter.

If you absolutely don't have space for anything else, I'd definitely suggest getting something that has drawers to make it easier to find food. I could have dealt with the capacity of the fridge, but not the height.

You could buy a mini fridge or freezer to keep on the worktop for extra capacity and for frequently used items. I think Aldi has some online this week.
