Redecorating new house - what order?

We are due to move soon. We are thinking of trying to get some redecoration done between exchange and completion, before all our furniture and stuff is moved in.

What would you prioritise - painting or carpets? In what order? Or neither and wait until we’re in?

Thanks in advance!

Depends how much you've got to do I think.

We have a real fixer up of a house, and tackled the bedrooms before moving in so we (well, the children really) had a nice room to sleep and play in.

It’s not in bad nick. Just all a bit random / dated! Definitely livable. We just wondered about trying to make it all nice and clean and new and neutral.

Not an expert, but would you actually be allowed to decorate before completion?

I wondered the same about the ins and outs of working on a house that isn't yours. You wouldn't even have the keys, would you?

If it's a lick of paint and new carpets you're after, then allow a few days for painting and changing carpets should be completed in a day so little hassle. However, it takes a while from order to installation and you should try several paints before committing to you'll need time to do it properly.

You wouldn't get the keys until you complete unless you have agreed a special arrangement , all exchange means it that you are legally bound by deposit and paperwork to complete the purchase so it's not yours until completion

Thanks for replies. Sorry I should have said: assume the seller has agreed for this to happen!

In that case for a basic refresh - strip out unwanted bits ( carpet , wallpaper etc) thouroughly prep all surfaces to be painted ( wash with sugar soap solution , sand , paint remove etc) start by cutting in corners and edges then start at the top with emulsion and work downwards, ceilings then walls , woodwork , touch ups and snags then carpets replaced last
I now only use water based satin for woodwork , less smell , dries quicker, better for environment, etc 2 coats of undercoat one of Top best bonus's are doesn't yellow like oil based gloss and doesn't show imperfections as much as it absorbs light rather that bouncing it

We had a few days after buying before moving in, was able to get the entire house carpets cleaned whilst it was totally empty which was brilliant! I got a slightly cheaper price too due to there being no furniture for the carpet cleaner to move/work around.
