How do you start on redecorating an entire house?!

As title suggests really. We're just about to start renovating our new house before we move in. All rooms need redecorating, currently everywhere is magnolia but covered in maeks/poor condition so needs starting from scratch. Don't really know where to begin as it's all so overwhelming!

Is it a refurb or decoration (making pretty) question?

If the latter, then I wouldn't rush it. Make sure you're kitchen and bathrooms are lovely and you have nice, neutral flooring throughout. The walls could be skimmed and painted white. Then, you can go room by room thinking of colours, furniture and decorations to use once you've moved in.

If the walls are full of marks and dints and you're in fish to move, if completley 're plaster the whole house. Start from fresh. Then decorate.

You're not in a rush to move

I agree, your kitchen and bathroom first, then your bedroom, living room, and so on.

I am the opposite. I would never move in to the house where there were several rooms left to decorate. How is this supposed to work?
Surely it is easier to do anything while this house is empty? Otherwise you will be forever moving furniture.
We did the whole house before we moved in - picked a colour scheme and each room was a variation on that (so dark / light / different shade), then we did the details like curtain rods etc and in the end picked the curtains. We didn't change the floor as it was fine :)

We are about to start this in a few weeks.
Luckily DP is a decorator but I'm not looking forward to it

Thanks everyone. We're moving in on 19th march so haven't got masses of time, although we have decorators going in to do the work for us so the time side isn't too much of an issue. I'm more struggling to know what colours etc to go for.

It's not our house although landlord is happy for us to decorate but is keen to keep a fairly neutral colour scheme. The plan I think is to do a couple of feature walls in each room with a neutral colour everywhere else and on the other walls, but struggling to find a neutral colour that I would want to paint all over my house!!

Oh, so it's just a case of a lick of paint in a rental? It might help to go into B&Q or similar and get a few sample pots. Paint the colours up on sheets on A4 and pop into the house to try your samples in different rooms, preferably in the daytime and with artificial lighting. That won't delay the painting by more than a day but gives you a good chance of colours that you are happy with.

There's more to be done - new windows, a wall to rip down, new bathroom etc but that's all under control and being sorted now - it's just the decorating side I didn't know let where to start! That's a good idea about putting it on paper so I can move it round the house I hadn't thought of doing it like that - thank you!

Start at the top and work down, or you end up trashing what you've already made nice!

work out to your priorities and your budget. Have one room as a refuge so that you can be happy otherwise it will be a bit like food shopping when you are hungry.
It is always work living in a little if you can bare it before you do anything expensive,
Once you have a budget for the whole lot then work out an order. I,e, there is no point decorating if you need to replace windows first.
With the expensive items sometimes it is worth waiting for the sales.
Get colour swatches, and go on Pinterest.

Thanks everyone. We went round this evening with some tester pots, only to find a burst pipe in the roof pouring down through the house. Currently it's under 3 inches of water and needs replastering and a new kitchen at the least so priorities will have to change and move date will be pushed back... Suddenly wall colour seems less important!!!
