Navy Blue Kitchen

I am considering repainting our kitchen navy blue… Going against DH who is on the conservative side so need to be sure I am doing the right thing. It is a bright room, three outside walls with windows on each. Some of the cupboards are oak which I want to leave unpainted and we have black granite which I'm not replacing.

I'm rubbish at this sort of thing so any advice would be appreciated please? Much of the wall space is taken up with pictures etc so I don't think it will be too overwhelming.

A mumsnetterbhad a fabulous blue kitchen and posted the pics on here. I wonder if the thread is still around?

I painted two walls in ds's bedroom navy and they mark like nobody's business-I wouldn't do it again. But maybe a kitchen paint would cope better than a flat emulsion?

And remember it can all be repainted if you hate it!

I think it would look lovely provided that you have lots of natural light and good lighting for when it's dark. You'd need lots of white on the walls etc too to avoid it looking too gloomy. And oak cupboards/ floor would help it feel warm.

Thanks both😀
I know what you mean about dark walls marking ....our kitchen gets a lot of hammer so needs to be robust!
I like the dark units in that pic but wanted to do the walls navy not the furniture and their doesn't seem to be many pictures around of navy walls… all navy units!

I love navy, we're going for F&B Drawing Room Blue for the island and back wall, it's a bright navy.

What colour is the floor? With oak cupboards and black granite worktops, I would be worried about it looking dark unless you have a light floor. I'd also look at white/bright accessories. Do you have a backsplash? White tiles might help stop it from being too dark

I have been considering this as I do like the look but I honestly think it is too 'now' and in 8-10 years will look very dated. Depends how often you are planning to update your kitchen but I'd go for something more neutral. I feel the same way about curved cupboards.

I'm worried about it looking dated, so we're going for classic shaker units in solid wood so that they can be easily repainted if needed. I agree with the curved units too, they'll easily identify the date of a kitchen

Thanks for your thoughts. I'm not too worried about it looking dark as the floor is light (cream) and was going to keep the cupboards light coloured & much of the wall is covered by pictures etc. Not sure about blue next to the oak cupboards… Might just be a bit too much.

Will keep trawling Pinterest😀 Like you say, can always re-paint if it's awful! Good luck with your projects!

I think it all sounds a bit dark.

Navy goes really well with oak, but I think the issue will likely be the black worktops, if they were paler, it would look lovely. You could always try it out and see how it works, then repaint if it doesn't work. This pic is in today's Good Homes

We’ve had our navy kitchen for a few months and I’d love to change it to either white or wood already... Here’s our colour scheme though. It’s more of a fresh, bright overall feel. It’s pretty light in there - I only just took te photo with no light on and it’s getting a bit dark outside already.

Why do you dislike it JoJo? It looks fab

wellhonestly · 26/02/2018 18:50

tbh I like the sound of everything except the black worktops which I think will look odd with navy walls. Sorry OP! Rest of it sounds lovely.

Jojo, that looks like Hague Blue? I really like it but am coming round to thinking blue walls might be something I will regret. And I can't cope with having the kitchen decorated more than once in ten years😬

GoAndAsk, it is Hague Blue.

4years, I really liked it when we got it but generally I tend to get fed up with any bright/strong colours quickly. I had a bright yellow garden room that I went from loving to hating within a year or 2. Then had a turquoise bedroom that I went off with about 2 years later. And now the kitchen.

Otherwise, my house has a lot of colour but mostly artwork, rugs, cushions etc. I don't get bored of those but some of the stuff is on rotation (like cushions and throws). But really bold statements start bothering me pretty soon. OP, not to say that this will happen to you - it might not. Come to think of it, we had a navy sitting room in the last house for about 3 years and I wasn't bothered.
