Hallway carpet wrong colour!

I am completely aware this is a total first world problem but I have just had a much wanted and planned for hallway/stair carpet fitted and it is the wrong colour. I thought I'd chosen a dark grey, I'm sure it's even called slate but in reality it looks more brown or even green. It must be the light and maybe the time of day (aware I'm completely clutching at straws). It's kind of mushroom colour on the top landing. I'm not even sure why I'm posting other than to have someone reassure me I haven't just spent £££ on a brown carpet?

Definitely dark grey! I agree with maybe changing the colour on the wall, maybe all white would make the carpet look greyer. Post more pics when you get back!

Was just going to say, the grey on the walls is s different grey tonally, which will bring out the other shades/tones in the carpet. Change that and I'm sure your carpet will look grey again!

Sleepthief (and pp's) that is music to my ears! I want some colour on the wall though, not sure about going completely white? What shade do you think would work?

What shade do you currently have? It looks slightly blueish. I'd hazard a guess at polished pebble? You need a slightly warmer grey.

It would look lovely with a soft mustard.

Soft mustard sounds really good actually. I'm loving yellow just now but would worry it would accentuate the brown maybe. It's currently dulux engraved locket but could quite easily be altered. Although I do really like the shade. Did FaceTime earlier with the kids and carpet looked grey- hurrah. Asked 7 year old DS what colour he thought it was 'blue ish grey' he is actually colour blind though so maybe not best person to ask Grin

I think mustard may make the carpet look even more brown? And then you might end up with a yellow-tone wall and brown carpet and it all might end up a little 70s?!

How about a blue tone? A bluey-charcoal? I actually think the wall looks great as it is, those sophisticated colours are never "flat" and I think it's nice that you can see so many tones in it!

Yes absolutely agree, although I think pale mustard could be lovely it would bring out the brown.

I'm going to live with it as it is before getting my paint brush out again. It was hard work getting it looking like it does.

Agree that maybe a blue tone would bring out the grey so if it is really brown will give that a go. DP groans every time I bring out the testers but this time even he has suggested that maybe changing the colour will help. According to DP (who is also likely to be colour blind although does not have the official diagnosis that DS has) it is more brown later in the day. I'm thinking a rug on the top landing as well. A grey oneGrin.

Blue won't bring out the grey..it will bring out the brown. A grey rug will make the carpet look brown.
Yellow may make it look more grey, depends on tone, it won't make it look more brown. I'm afraid it is a bit trial and error.
Eg magenta next to my pink skin tone makes it look grey (dead!) because it "sucks" the pink.

I was just going to say that blue will make it look more brown, it's basic colour theory. If I want a colour to look stronger I put the opposite colour next to it, so brown is in the orange spectrum and blue is opposite, they will play off each other and both look stronger.

I've just painted my living room grey and I expect to have a problem finding the perfect grey carpet!

Interesting, thank you v much, so maybe back to the pale mustard then!! I love thinking about paint/decor so this is fine really, but whilst I enjoy putting stuff together I know nothing about the theory so it's really helpful- thank you.

I'd leave it how it is. It looks gorgeous. I know it's not what you envisioned but it's looking good.

It looks very nice. But it wouldn't hurt to get a swatch of the colour you ordered to check. I had a carpet fitted and they accidentally put slightly different shades in adjoining rooms, then tried to pretend it was a trick of the light.

Looks like Pantone Opaque Couche
www.pantone.com/color-finder/448-C

sort of a greeny brown, which is warm and in stark contrast to your cool grey lower wall. That's why it looks so 'warm.'

Try changing the lightbulb to a cool toned LED and if that fails, paint the walls a warm colour.
