Carpet. One colour everywhere or different colours in different rooms?

I've just had a tonne of building work done and am carpeting the whole house apart from bathrooms etc. that are tiled. It's a three storey house.

I am really struggling to work out whether to go for a single colour throughout or whether to have, for example, one colour for the stairs and landings, another in the front room and maybe one for the bedrooms. I would perhaps get a lighter beige for the bedrooms, a darker one for the stairs and not sure for the front room.

Any advice? I am a bit challenged in the style department

Personally, I like the same carpet throughout with some hard/wooden floors. Obviously hard floors in the kitchen and bathroom, maybe wooden flooring in the hall? Once you find the right neutral carpet that will go with everything, you can then vary and change the wall colours in each room. Personal choice though and depends on the layout of the house....

I'd pick one colour throughout, it could be more economical, and I think it gives a feeling of space to the house.
You can always add rugs later, for some colour/contrast.

I think it depends very much on the style of the house. Period properties can take different carpets more than newer ones.

One colour. Brings the house together nicely.

We've done similar colours but different weaves - so the carpet on the stairs is non slip and hardy, carpets in the bedrooms a bit more luxuriant and the rest of in Antico tile it in a toning shade.

I like the one colour everywhere look, but did let the DDs choose their own carpet colours when they were decorating their rooms.

Our room is a different colour to the landing carpet at the moment, but it's well overdue for decorating and will be carpeted with the same colour as in the landing when we can bear to go through the fuss of it all .

Got wood flooring in the living room and hall about 2 years back, and would never go back to carpet. It looks pristine, sweeping it clean takes about 3 mins, and I love how it looks (and you can choose a couple of really nice rugs if you want a cosy feeling for e.g. the bit where you sit..)

Different! Same colour throughout looks boring! Each room needs its own feel!

I don't really get why one colour brings the house together etc if you can't see in every room at the same time. Also, doesn't that mean your decorating choices are all dictated by the carpet colour?

We've gone for similar to your idea OP - light stone for living rm (browny beige with flecks), mid grey for stairs and landing and light grey in bedrooms. We have a tiled hallway which separates stairs and living room, so there's no clash, and I think the move from mid to light grey upstairs from landing to bedrooms looks really nice.

Personally I like one colour all the way through. I think it looks really classy and ties everything together. Or the same in all
Rooms with a contrast in the hall stairs and landing.
But a word of advice, don't have carpet in the hallway if you can avoid it. Biggest mistake I made. Even with a porch (and mat and firm instructions to everyone to wipe their feet) the first 2 foot got filthy from shoes. I could clean it but once carpet has been cleaned it loses it's coating and would get filthy again in a matter of days. Replacing it with hardwood was the best thing I did.

One colour throughout

I'm genuinely interested as to why one colour throughout makes a house feel tied together - I can see why it makes a house feel more spacious if, for example, all the flooring in an open plan living rm/kitchen is the same as nothing to break the eye, but why does it matter if your living rm is a different colour from your master bedroom upstairs? Just wondering what the logic is as in the past (like when I was a kid and patterned carpet was fashionable!) the norm was different carpets for different rooms according to the decor of each room.

Definitely same carpet throughout in the rooms you want carpet, personally I think it looks cheap to have different carpets. Each to their own though

We're about to recarpet our whole house (except the floors that are wood or tile) and will be going for greige throughout, which I'd like to think is a strategic nod to attaining the holy grail of flow... but is probably more a violent reaction to the green, pink and (two different) blue carpets that we inherited from the previous owner.

I don’t like all the carpets the same colour it reminds me of cheap renovation projects in the 00s.

We have parquet downstairs, stone flooring in bathrooms, chequerboard in en suite, but all bedrooms, landing and fairs are a light grey.

Only difference is my room and dressing room and the girls rooms have glitterbut same colour and brand as the other carpets.

Where carpeted; stairs and upstairs bedrooms, all one colour in my house.

Bathrooms have tiled floors.

Kitchen, downstairs bedrooms, corridors and living rooms all hardwood floors with rugs.

We have three floors - same karndean flooring on ground floor, another colour of karndean flooring throughout 1st floor, 2nd floor has same carpet throughout (except bathroom). Both sets of stairs have the same carpet which tones with the 2nd floor carpet. I'd have found it a bit dull to have the same carpet throughout the whole house and it allows for a bit of flexibility in decorating style on each floor.

One colour. However, you will need an expensuve carpet and underlay on the stairs as highest footfall so if cost comes into it, put a cheaper carpet in bedrooms
