Single mum, busy, need to do up bathroom, secured much-coveted local builder but he only has very limited availability.

Toilet and basin remaining.

So, I need....
New flooring
Tiling
Shower
Shower encasement
Paint

Turn of the century, traditional property.

I need to future proof it so I’m prepared to pay for a very good shower so that it lasts. Not digital though.

Please help. Design flair is most definitely NOT my forte.

Thanks v much

Possible flooring option similar vibe to the amtico but simpler and half price

Look at tons of tiles for fired earth crackle glaze and other dupes e.g.
crackle glaze

I have glass brick tiles from walls and floors in one ensuite which I love:

After vague research I got hansgrohe shower but bought it on a cheap price fluctuation on amazon. Assuming you are running it off the mains water ask for a good pump and make sure you get a thermostatic valve.

We have a vintage style aqualisa shower in another bathroom which I'm also happy with.

Cubicles are makti.

The first bathroom I did I had a lovely mirror but standard mirror. Second bathroom I'd realised that proper bathroom mirror features like demisting and backlight were really useful. I looked on John Lewis to establish brands I could look for and then bought one off a random website for half the John Lewis price.

If you are having cast iron radiators allow time for ordering. In fact ignore any next day delivery claims on any website for anything!

If you want to future proof it the next don’t go for a concealed valve.

I love the tongue and groove panelling, and with a crackle glaze subway tile around the shower it will look classic and timeless. There's one above on the tons of tiles site called Kensington which is a beautiful mid-blue/grey, you can either pick that up in a paler shade on the tongue and groove and keep the rest of the walls white, or vice versa.

You can also get patterned vinyl flooring tiles that look quite impressive like these

Have a look at www.harveymaria.com for some lovely patterned vinyl tiles.

Those floor tiles are beautiful and exactly my style BUT worryingly cheap and no brand to research. I need it to be robust and last and I’m prepared to pay for it

I have the glass tiles in starlight - they look pale green. I have pale pink walls with them and a crystally light so it's a quite a girly bathroom. The floor is not great though - it's a wood effect karndean which goes through to the bedroom so we kept it when we redid the bathroom.

I have the Harvey Maria floor tiles I linked in black/white in another bathroom and would really recommend them - a few have mentioned them on the thread so I'm not alone.

I went for wooden planking porcelain tiles in my shower room. They have a very high non slip rating and are really easy to keep clean. They go with any kind of decor.
I only had a small area to cover though.
I also went for metros because I like them and they give a nice retro feel without being OTT.
I asked for off white grouting because white grout gets grubby so quickly.

Oddbutnotodd · 17/02/2018 12:34

All good ideas already.
Also look at Meryl shower enclosures - make sure the glass is at least 8mm. You will hate anything thinner. Special coating on glass works up to a point but regular vinegar spray keeps limescale in check.

You haven't mentioned a fan - I would put one in since you have a healthy budget.

Decide if you are buying items directly yourself or through trades. They will markup and add Vat. I bought most of my lights directly but paid more for my fan as it was supplied by the electrician.

Watching...I like Porcelanosa for tiles.

Have you looked at the ideal standard bathroom planner ? So useful

I was an early Harvey Maria customer. Bathroom floor was pale roses. Gorgeous.

Back then the tiles were cork backed and not particularly recommended for bathrooms. However they were fantastic, no problems at all in a hardworking family bathroom. Still looked amazing 13 or so years on. I'd use them again in a heartbeat.
