Reupholstering? Is it worth it?

We have a lovely sofa - it was really expensive when we bought (10 years ago) it but we have always loved the shape and style. Am thinking about having it reupholstered as it has taken a bit of a beating over the years and is definitely beyond cleaning now - would love to reinvigorate it somehow!

Has anyone done this? Does it end up costing more than a new sofa??

Have looked at the Plumbs website but wondered if anyone has any experiences they could share. Any thoughts gratefully received! Smile

This is my dilemma at the moment! I've just redecorated (see previous thread on f & b colours!) and am looking at getting my sofas reupholstered. I had a quote a couple of years ago at the shop where I bought them and it just wasn't worth it as it would have been nearly what I paid originally for them. I recently got a quote from another recommended company who have quoted me £1,100 to reupholster and some restuffing to both, you then have to add on the cost of the material and the cheapest I'm looking at is £20 per metre so I think it will be around another 700 in addition.

This would still be less than I paid originally for them, and is still about half the price of buying the other sofas I am coveting from sofa.com in smart velvet!

It's further complicated by the fact I'm looking for a velvet and can't find a fabric colour that I like in my price range. If I start increasing the fabric cost it really won't be worth it. I just feel awful dumping perfectly good sofas that are very well made. I'm just not sure if it is a false economy and I'm worried I'm going to make the wrong fabric choice and regret it! This has been going on since Sep!

Sorry I haven't been much help! I think my point is that if you really love your sofas it can be worth it if you get a reasonable quote, although it won't be a huge saving. The company I'm looking at using have been really patient with me! I'm just outside NW London and they are based in Essex, they will collect and return included in the price.

We are just getting 3 redone that we originally had made for us at sofa workshop. The cost is about what we paid for them originally, but if we wanted to replace with new of same quality would be nearly 3 times the price!

They weigh an absolute ton but we really like them. We got an upholsterer in to ask advice and then did our research. Ours are about 18 years old.

Thanks ladies, that’s about what I thought!
I have a feeling it’s going to be an eye-watering quote but seems ridiculous to get rid of a really good quality sofa!
Could I ask who you are using?

just getting my sofa recovered by LB upholsterer based in Winslow, Buckinghamshire quite a lot of money but so wasteful to throw it away

If you can get something similar for £2-3,000, I would get a new one.

If your sofa was much cheaper than this, it might not be worth it to reupholster.

I have a reclaimed sofa that was free and was quoted 3,000 plus fabric to have it reupholstered.

I found someone who did it for 1,000 and then I spent nearly the same again on a timerous beastie fabric and wool stuffing but now I have a beautiful sofa that has had a limited impact on the environment which appeals to my desire to lower my impact on the world.. even if it didn't quite come at the 'brocante' cost I was hoping for!!

I may be able to help with fabrics ladies, I am an interior designer and have accounts with most fabric houses. PM me if you want a chat.
