If you have vinyl flooring in your sitting room

Please tell me why it's great.

We're planning an extension which will join our sitting room and kitchen/diner through an archway. I have always preferred carpet in sitting rooms as it's so much cosier but I've been persuaded by DH that it will completely ruin the effect to have our lovely new vinyl flooring stop and retain the shabby carpet in the sitting room.

Please tell me how fabulous it is to have vinyl in the sitting room to help me to get over myself?

Depends what vinyl you're talking! If it's Amtico, or similar, then it'll be lovely 🙂 Like warm, soft wood flooring. Have a rug in the sitting room and it'll be lovely.

I'd happily swap my actual real wood floor for luxury vinyl 'wood' floor 😅

Well it depends on the vinyl! We had vinyl fitted 9 years ago, I was very against it like you but DH knew better! looks like parquet flooring and looked great for 7-8 years, looking a bit tired now but we put a giant wool rug in centre of floor and it looks fab again. Easy to clean, brush/mop, great for spills, pets and easy to keep room smelling good - never fusty. Also very hygienic. When you've cleaned it you know it's clean! Steam mops are super.

Definite prefer it to laminate I’ve had in the past. Looks just as good. Easy to mop. Can be more relaxed with the children.

Yes, Amtico, Karndean or similar - probably Polyflor as it's what our builder recommends. I've found some lovely parquet effect vinyl on Pinterest which has cheered me up no end.

I loathe rugs - I am a dreadful klutz and they are an unacceptable trip hazard - so they are not an option.

If it’s the good quality fake wood stuff then it’s brilliant. Easy to clean and warmer than wood. Just add a rug.

I should add that it was put down as a temporary flooring - only for a few years till DS got past the banana mashing period - but still looks very good so it stayed. DM did not realise it was vinyl till she walked across it and it didn't click clack under her shoes! Very warm too. I like the pattern of ours so it would depend what the vinyl your husband wants to continue through looks like. If it was tile effect I'd be saying no.

Possibly a stupid question - I understand that it’s softer underfoot than laminate. Does that mean that furniture leaves depressions, like in carpet pile?

We recently had vinyl flooring installed in a lounge, kitchen, dining room knock through.

I really like our because it's easy to keep clean and looks good, agree with your dh that a sudden change to carpet would ruin the look, can you have a rug in the lounge area for cosyness but with the continuity of the LVT throughout.

We've got carpet in our hall and sitting room, we'll be changing to run the LVT throughout.

Not really compelling reasons to have it but it's practical, we have pets and they've ruined the carpets in our house

Furniture doesn't leave imprints but we have those protection pads to protect against scratches.

You really need to put furniture pads on the bottom of legs to stop it being scratched - but it seems to withstand family life of e.g. toy cars being dropped well, much better than the engineered wood we had before.
