At the grand old age of 49 I’ve decided I need to redecorate my lounge so it doesn’t look like student digs. I’ve got paint and flooring chosen but haven’t a clue about ceiling lights. I’ve looked at Pinterest and all the shops but don’t know what is suitable for a lounge. Can you have a single pendant? Or should I be looking at lampshades and chandeliers? Any suggestions of lights you really like?

We have this but the rose bit in tv middle was already there. Technically doesn't suit our house as it's built in the 80s but sure what odds, I like it!

I also like & have in other rooms a white/opaque subtle patterned glass bowl shape pendant light

Meant to say what is the rest of the room like &'have you a certain 'style' that the room will be?

It’s a modern house so I’m guessing something contemporary is needed. Thanks for your post.,

Anything is better than a bare wire with a shade hanging from it.
You need high ceilings for chandeliers but there is plenty of nice lighting that doesn’t cost a fortune. Even the diy sheds like B&Q stock a large range of modern lighting.

Lighting makes a huge difference to a room. Think about room size - if you have the measurements a good lighting shop will advise what wattage you need to be able to fully light room. Also know what natural light room gets. Then put together a plan for room - think how you want the lighting to be in room - up lights / downlights / task lighting / will lamps work in some areas. What about lighting up pictures in room and wall lights? What is the wiring layout currently? Is it right? If not could your budget stretch to making changes to layout to suit your preferred lighting plan? Finally how about a dimmer(s), Also think about LED lights and how the room will look in winter / summer.

We rarely use the 'big light' in the middle. We have a pair of lamps either side of the main sofa & another in far corner. Because I'm very lazy I have the lamps hooked up to a smart plug linked to an echo dot so I just say 'lamp on' or off to operate rather than fiddling with all the buttons.

I have another pair of lamps in the hall that do the same but they're just on a timer plug.

Agree that lighting is important, I think lamplight is much nicer
