Cooking trays

Tin opener. Cork screw and bottle opener. Scissors.

Don't rush into getting loads of things, that's my advice. You'll still be looking at most of the stuff that you buy now in 30 years time so take your time and get what you really want.

Ask yourself if you really need it. We don't have any butter dishes, mug trees, that kind of stuff. Never needed them. Personally, I'd rather spend £10 on one beautiful spoon that can be used for everything than spend £10 on a load of crappy spoons that I will chuck out when I'm bored of them.

Antiques fairs/charity shops are great if you are into vintage or antiques. Generally pretty cheap.

i wouldn't pay a bomb for spoons either. I bought some from Ikea about ten years ago and they're still going strong, infact Ikea a great place to look!

mineofuselessinformation · 10/01/2018 20:20

I'd manage with the bare minimum for a week or so, then trundle off to IKEA with a list of things you've realised you need.
It's very individual (I have no need of a spaghetti spoon for instance).

Is it your first own home? Look around where you're living now and decide what you can/ can't live without. For example a tea/coffee/sugar set might be a complete waste if like me and DH you don't really drink tea or coffee and have a cupboard to keep the offending items in. Assuming you're on a budget. Are you taking towels/ tea towels/ bedding/ storage items from where you live or starting from scratch?

chillipip · 11/01/2018 13:03

Yes it's my first home with my partner, we also don't drink tea and coffee so we won't need jars and we don't eat bread so won't be needing a toaster or bread bin.

Two sets of bedding so you can use one set while the other set is in the wash.

GoodMorning1 · 11/01/2018 13:06

Kettle, microwave and toaster.

Loo brush and cleaning supplies as a place always needs some cleaning on moving in.
A washing up bowl, tea towels and kitchen bin.
If money is going to be tight start looking in charity shops for things like curtains and cushions

Move in, then you'll soon discover what you need (bitter experience of craving mash and not having a potato masher!).
