Purchases for new home!

Hi

In the next few months I will be purchasing my first house (I currently rent, non furnished). I will be moving in with partner and we have some of the bigger furniture required to furnish a home but in the next few months I’d like to start purchasing smaller bits and pieces so we are not paying out a huge amount all in one go.

Has anyone done this and if so what sort of things did you buy in advance??

Thanks

I have to say when I moved into my first home, I just had what people gave me. Just let people know you'll be moving - say 'in April' or whatever - and you'll be surprised what people might offer you.
I remember one lovely colleague bought something with her weekly shop every week - a tin opener or some kitchen scissors, or some tongs, or a ladle, etc.,etc. It was so lovely - I still use some of the things now, nearly 30 years later Smile, though I suppose if you are renting, you might have those sorts of things (?)

Wow what lovely friends/family, such a nice thing to do!

No I have very little as I live with my landlady and already furnished. I have use of their home as if it were my own. My partner has those things but he is in a shared house so will be splitting items with other tenant when we buy. So utensils will be going on the list...will take a look at the current sales!

My colleague was lovely - I agree.

The furniture (and curtains and things) though, I've realised as time has gone on, is just helping the world go round. Over the years, I've had somethings that I won't throw out as I know there's nothing wrong with them, but no longer need, so it's nice to be able to pass them on to someone who is just starting up. Just let people know you'll be starting with nothing, and you'll be surprised how pleased people are to pass things on. Smile

Also look on Freegle / Freecycle; join your local FaceBook selling page; start browsing the furniture charity shops - indeed, most charity shops will have plates and glasses etc. Car boots also - I got a lot of stuff for ds's student house from a lady at a car boot who was clearing a relative's house and really just didn't want to take stuff home with her. At this stage, put all your money into finding the biggest space in the nicest location you can afford, and worry about making it "just so" when your wallets have recovered a bit.
