If you were starting with a blank canvas, what colourscheme would you have? (Living room/family room)

New room is going to be informal living room/family room. Sort of rectangular (but slightly irregular with jutting out bit) with toys one end and tv & woodburner other end - I imagined it with a sofa dividing the two halves. 2 windows along one of the long sides. It gets lovely sun in the mornings.

New floor will be some sort of wood or maybe karndean.

That part of the house is early Victorian and we are in the country. The ceiling is quite low but there are no beams.

We need new floor, wall paint/paper, rugs and curtains/blinds. So we can start afresh with colour scheme.

We will incorporate our old & v comfy dark brown leather sofa but can put throws & cushions on it and will replace it in time.

So what colour scheme would you go for?

Feeling very uninspired and don't want to get it wrong!!

Thinking grey/silver ish but maybe that's on its way out?

Quite like Laura Ashley stuff

I was thinking grey with a mustardy yellow but similar to chandler, think grey might be slightly overdone now.

These sort of yellows... www.missprint.co.uk/product-category/wallpaper/yellow-wallpaper/

Our sounds the exact same and I love laura ashley.

We panelled ours (off white) and went for cranberry Henley stripe wallpaper and curtains in cranberry (then went for mirrors with a distressed finished in off white ). Also have brown leather sofas .. Lots of textured cushions

That sounds lovely, and funnily enough I was thinking about paneling half height with paper above. Maybe in a darker shade then it would also be quite practical for the kids as there's still a toddler who I wouldn't trust with nice wall paper!

I have two pre school children so find the wood more hard wearing.

Have you had a look on Houzz or Pinterest for inspiration? I will feel a bit sorry for such an old house to get vinyl flooring, though.

We're currently painting our bedroom a khaki green. It's a very big room and it looks amazing

Baxdream · 19/12/2017 11:27

It's this colour

I'd go for pure white until you have a feel for how the room looks in different light.
A woman who worked in a home design shop said that the best way is to start with the curtains.

I could've written this post so shamelessly place marking. Also a Laura Ashley fan with a rectangular kitchen to decorate. Oak floor, cream and oak cupboards. We currently have cranberry, cream and sage green stuff and don't want to start again with everything new but up for suggestions. I like the turquoise colour LA have introduced with their Autumn collection. Not sure what curtains to have, and looking for a small sofa to put at an angle by the french windows. My Pintrest is full of French country kitchen ideas but not quite sure how to get texture, warmth going?
