Valspar paint have we messed up?!

We've just had 15l of valspar v500 blend mixed at local b&q after being convinced innstore that it's better than dulux easycare. Came home and looked it up and am horrified by really bad reviews and even watchdog getting involved about the bad smell.

B&q won't take it back unless "there's a problem with the paint". Decorator is coming tomorrow.

Valspar say the bad paint should all be fixed and new batches should be fine so I'm wondering if anyone has bought it recently and still had problems?

Hesitant to lose £120 by buying new paint straight away so thinking to risk it and hope there's no issues!!

It doesn’t matter if it appears thin

Thicker paints don’t cover any better.

thenightsky · 12/11/2017 23:21

We used it in our kitchen in March. Coverage was fab and colour was true to the little card.

On the back of that great first experience, we used it again in the bedroom. Same experience. No issues.

Didn't notice any icky smell either time.

Just used it in my kitchen..absolutely fine

Giraffey1 · 12/11/2017 23:26

I used Valspar in the family bathroom. I’ve never used such an appalling paint - crappy coverage is being polite. I lost track of the number of coats I painted. And it still looks rubbish! It didn’t smell, though.....

I’ve used Valspar trade in my living room and hall recently. It was fine. Never noticed an odour.

Decorated it house in Valspar 2.5yrs ago when we bought it - excellent coverage and no extraordinary smells... maybe the reviews are from a bad batch! People only ever take time to write bad reviews xx

I used valspar just a month or so back to decorate 4 bedrooms. I think I used the top of the range wipeable one. Had 5 different colours.
No bad smell, good coverage and no stripes or difference in texture once on the wall. I’m very happy with it.

Used Valspar in sunroom (strong sunlight) and shower room (lots of moisture, obvs) a couple of years ago now. No probs at all.

NotJustThreeSmallWords · 13/11/2017 00:28

I bought loads of Valspar tester pots and found the colour was way off and it was really sticky to use so googled it and found out that loads of people have complained about it. I went with another brand in the end because I didn't want to risk the smell being a problem too. This was only about 3 months ago.
Which doesn't help you at all. Sorry!

Thanks all it seems a bit hit and miss. It's a light colour (colour matched dulux nutmeg white) but going onto a dark blue. Will have to speak to the decorator because he thinks it'll just need two coats of colour - no primer or white wash. So I'll ask him to try 2 coats on a smaller area first and see how that goes on.

Hate that b&q can convince you it's a better paint and sway us so easily!

Thing is it actually is a better ( than average) paint if used correctly

Painting it straight on to dark blue is not going to work though

People rarely prepare surfaces correctly but I’d expect a decorator to!!

fluffydogs · 13/11/2017 08:02

Our decorator loved the velspar, most of our house is painted in it, no issues!
However, you’ll need an undercoat over the blue whatever paint you use!!

Polpette · 14/11/2017 07:50

Valspar is amazingly good paint - goes on well, great coverage (although you may need more than one coat as you're going over a dark colour), colour pigmentation is excellent, hard wearing and looks good for years. I've painted my whole house and it's better than the expensive and impossible to use Farrow & Ball I had before.

I believe the woodwork paint is not worth it but have only heard good things about the wall paint.

There was a smell issue with several batches of paint not so long ago but that was identified and rectified very quickly.

CrabappleCake · 16/11/2017 07:45

Our decorator, who is old school and good, was really happy to use it, no smell and looks great in three storey hall way.

DryHeave · 16/11/2017 07:48

We used Valspar. No smell issue. BUT 6 months after painting now and it’s going all patchy and almost like it’s ‘splitting’ and wearing away? Very weird.

Jasminedes · 16/11/2017 07:50

I hadn't heard about the problems, we used it in loads of rooms, didn't seem any worse than any other paint I have used. I think we needed three coats, but we often find that. Have used their woodwork paint too.

Jasminedes · 16/11/2017 07:50

It was fine, and is still fine.

chaplin1409 · 16/11/2017 07:55

Our whole house is in valspar and it was great until the last pot we had that had the problem. I would not use or recommend it again now just in case the smell happened again.

user1479289699 · 16/11/2017 16:12

The paint is on - just 2 coats and it's covered the blue up completely. No smell so far and painter said it was fine to work with. Lets see how it wears over next few months. Thanks all
